Solomon doesn't seem to have any issue with the blood. While
it's not his personal focus, he's dealt with plenty of more
complicated and sometimes gross sorts of rituals, and any that
are done quickly are ultimately the preferred type when it's
someone else's. He's more particular about his own, of course.
As the pair of them shift with the spell's energy, his own shirt
pops a few buttons, but otherwise is baggy enough to hold,
though it's particularly tight. He'll worry about that later.
He's quick to get all of the crates open but does his best to
avoid actually touching the contents, instead just slipping them
all out and together. Of course, all the magical checks in the
world don't help in dealing with a more mundane booby trap.
As the gas hits him, Solomon coughs violently, a bit of blood
splattering down on the ground as he tries to keep himself
stable.

Dammit, Meadow, why are you always so sloppy!
I should have guessed about the booby traps, but this isn’t some
comic book or TV show! Even so, I am a doctor, and my mandate is
to heal. The green gas tears at my lungs, and my own mouth is
full of blood, but that’s all to the good for my purposes.
As soon as the gas is clear and not doing any more damage, I
seize Solomon, tell him, “Sorry,” and lay a liplock on him that
would break a bishop’s piety. I’m not a person who holds back on
general principle, and this is important; when you do magic, it
is all about conviction and commitment.
And boy, do I ever commit.

The healing washes over us like a wave, life and energy and
vitality, and if I am forced to honesty, it probably encourages
me to hold the kiss maybe a little longer than I need to.
Pretty sure the grinding was unnecessary too.
I pull back from him, just slightly, still wrapped around him,
eyes lidded, and lick my lips. “Desperate measures,” I tell him.
I’m not panting. Really, I’m not. Coughing makes you short of
breath.

Solomon had of course checked for magic and knew there weren't
any triggered spells or the like, but of course there's little
his arcana can do to assist against a more mundane trap.
Especially when they'd already seen one break WITHOUT the trap.
Clever, to randomize it like that.
His first thought when Meadow says sorry is that she must be
talking about the trap itself, to which he opens his mouth to
try and assure her that it's not her fault. Said mouth is full
of tongue before any attempt to speak can be made.
Positive reinforcement is a thing, though, and his arms wrap
around her out of reflex as the healing magic starts to wash
over him, knitting his injured lungs back together and undoing
the worst of what the toxins had caused.
The grinding certainly wasn't needed, even if parts of him
disagree with that. He blinks once when the kiss finally ends,
taking a single deep breath to regain composure as quickly as he
can manage.
"Right, desperate..." he clears his throat. "The chemicals?" he
motions vaguely towards the now de-gassed remaining components.
He wants to dissolve the taint afterward since he's not sure how
much might be bound up in the Gross living patterns.

“Hmm?” I ask, momentarily very distracted.
“Oh!” Carefully disentangling myself, I smooth my shirt and
shiver. “Right. The chemicals.” I take a brief moment to compose
myself, then dash off into the museum.
Now, janitor’s closets usually have signs and things, but I spy
a likely one, and give the handle a jimmy. The door pops open,
and out falls a collection of junk like something out of a
cartoon, burying me under falling debris and eliciting a short
and very stupid scream from me.
Which gets the attention of a security guard.
I watch him as he hustles over, holding up his belt in one hand
– the poor man, he should see a doctor about all that extra
weight he’s carrying, it’s not good for his heart – and sigh. I
focus in on him, and isolate the big nerve that runs from the
brain stem down through the chest and abdomen. It’s called the
vagus nerve, and when you tweak in in just the right way….

The poor guard’s eyes roll up in the back of his head and he
collapses like a broken puppet midstride. I wince a little, as I
worm myself out from under the debris, then rush over to lay him
out so he doesn’t cramp or anything and check him for injuries.
He’ll be fine.
Then I steal his keys and head back to Solomon, careful to avoid
any more guards.

“Little wrinkle,” I tell him, handing him the keys. “Couldn’t
find the janitor’s closet. Kind of got the attention of a guard.
He’s sleeping now. You want to take a stab at finding the stuff?
All we need is bleach or ammonia. Either one. Bleach is better.”

Solomon winces as he hears the clattering from down the way, and
carefully starts to head in that direction, meeting her part of
the way back only to have keys placed in his hand. He sighs

Moving off in that same direction, well, it takes him a fair
bit, and even though he checks the obvious places, he can't seem
to find the bleach. But these places are germ factories of
children, so they must have it.
Focusing on a quick spell, a murmur of high speech and a glance
into his mirror, the walls around him, well, they don't melt
away, per se, but he doesn't need them. His mind accelerates
slightly to help him parse this new outlook, and he realizes
fairly quickly that while it was indeed int he closet he
checked, it was inside one of those carts that was facing the
wrong way so he didn't notice it.
Releasing that spell quickly, as it's disorienting to say the
least, he quickly heads back into there, grabs the bleach, and
makes his way back. "Anything special we need to do to make sure
all of this stuff is cleansed?" he asks Meadow as he opens it up
and hands the bottle to her. Life expert gets to kill the germs.

“I’m telling you again,” I tell him again, “that this’ll only
kill the microbes. Most of them. Not even all of them. And it’ll
do nothing about the Abyssal taint. If, however, we can cleanse
the taint off first, we can let wholesome natural microbes
flourish without a bleach bath.”
I set the bottle down and rub my face. “I’m only thinking of it
now, but I did tell you before that killing the microbes
wouldn’t clear the taint. It’s in the objects and the ashes. But
no, nothing special. In fact, I could do it without the bleach –
but while sterilization doesn’t exactly count as an act of
violence –” because if it did, I couldn’t do my job “ – that
doesn’t mean I like it. I really think we should call VIII. It’s
entirely possible that even the bleach won’t work, now that I
think about it. We can’t be sure how the abyss has affected
those microbes.”
I poke him in the chest and give him a narrow-eyed look. “And if
this is about stupid male pride, then I will call VIII and
explain why you didn’t.”
It isn’t quite until I’m done speaking that I realize I’ve more
or less defaulted to thinking of him as the leader of our little
crew. Well, and why not? He was the one who came up with the
plan, and executed most of it. He’s been in the lead.
Might as well let him stay there.

Solomon rubs his temples in that 'nobody but me understands
anything' sort of way. You know the way. You've seen it. You've
done it.
"So, the thing is, abyssal taint is multi-faceted. If the
microbes are tainted on the physical level, they spit their
byproducts up both physically and into the spiritual resonance
around them. I can sear away the spiritual resonance that's been
tainted, as that comes and goes naturally and I feel no guilt
about it. I also promised my good friend," purposely
exaggerating because he's noticed how Meadow's reacted to its
presence, motioning to Murder by Numbers (that's its name in his
head), "we'd get rid of it in exchange for it both helping and
behaving."
"But if I remove that, and the microbes remain, the tainted
Resonance will reform. If the microbes are removed and I don't
do that, the taint will likely slowly settle in or attract
something else. We need to remove both facets of it in this
case," he says.
He does give her a minor glare as she pokes his chest. "Do you
really think they're going to send someone in that will leave
any part of what's there behind, if we ask them for backup?" he
asks, avoiding commenting directly on the pride bit. "Unless
they have a Master onhand, they'll need to go at it from both
angles too."

I sigh heavily. “What I’m not understanding is why you can’t
just cleanse them both at once, but if you can’t, then you
can’t. I just wanted to try to think of everything, is all.”
“The best method, if we can do it, would be to dilute the bleach
in water. Get more of it spread around that way, but we’ve
already been here longer than we should have. Which is also why
I suggested calling in reinforcements. Saturating the ashes is
the only way to be sure with those, but everything else a good
dunking should take care of. If we just pour it over the pile,
there will be places it doesn’t get and it’ll leave a mark on
the concrete. Seriously, have you never used bleach?” I ask him,
a little crossly, I’ll admit. “Don’t get it on your skin, or
your clothes. I can heal a chemical burn, but it won’t be any
fun for you and I can’t fix your clothes.”
I’m fretting because our current conditions don’t really allow
us to do any of this right. I should take a culture, examine
these things, but I don’t have the tools to do so; no kind of
sterile container, no glass slides, nothing.
Finally, I shake my head. “No special process. Just…every
surface, best you can. It’ll ruin it for whatever they wanted to
use it for, which is all to the good, but I don’t know enough
about sympathetic connections to guess if they’ll be able to
trace it back to us.”
“Or,” I say, looking speculatively at the truck that was left
behind, “we can load it all back in the truck and take it
somewhere we can do better work.”
And risk infection ourselves. I can assist with that, somewhat,
but there’s only so many mortal authorities I can stupefy or
seduce before things start getting awkward.

"I... in theory know how to use bleach," he claims with a
grumble. Look, with all the modern cleaning solutions not
everyone needs to learn the basics, alright?
"I really don't think we can afford to go to a secondary
location. I still need to find the security room and delete the
footage of us even being here, one way or another. My magic
keeps anyone there now from paying attention, but if anyone
checks it later..." he trails off with a motion of his hand,
figuring that it's obvious.

I have Solomon get me a few more things, and then I get started
on my work while he gets to work on his. What I’m doing is
neither intricate nor difficult; I’m soaking the bigger pieces
in a bucket for a few minutes while I pour measured dilutions of
watered bleach into the containers of ash and stir it about with
the utensils Solomon found for me. Each is left to dry on its
own. It’s rough and dirty work but should accomplish what we
need…more or less. It’s a truism that it’s impossible to
completely disinfect anything in the field, but the only better
solution would be fire, and we don’t have the means or the time
or the ability to hide a bonfire.
And I’m not burning down the Children’s Museum. It’d be a good
cover, but I just can’t make myself do it.
I work methodically and steadily, not rushing. Truthfully,
Solomon will probably be done before I am.
Then he can come help.
