       ---------------------------------------------------------
I can't believe I let that happen... "Fuck." I say mostly to
myself. Whatever just happened, I can't let it slide. My bosses
will be down my ass about it. I walk back to my desk and grab my
fingerprint dusting kit. I dust the few places I saw her touch
and carefully set them on a white sheet of paper so they stand
out from the black desks. I use my phone to take pictures of
them and send them to a friend in the lab across town with the
       word urgent texted with them.
After that? I take the prints down to the local lab in the
basement. "Chuck, I need these prints run asap." I say as I hand
them to him. Chuck grumbles. He hates actually doing his job.
Then I'm off, to our internal surveillance room. She has to be
on at least a couple cameras, right? And, she's there, but
nothing that shows her actual face. There we are, in records,
but her back is to the camera. I check another one, Caroline
stands and obscures her face as the camera passes by, and when
it swings back, she's moving to fast her face is blurred. "The
fuck." I say as I stare at the cameras. She seems to have the
devil's luck. "Where are you?" I ask to myself and begin to cast
       a spell.

I hear the sound of a train, specifically one of the old subway
trains. Their horns are distinct from the overland trains. I
also smell the scent of rust... I think I know where to go...
But first... My friend in the lab across town sends me a case
number. I should check that first. So I head to records.Case
File #3124-A5, it's a cold case, I take the file and leave. I'm
reading it as I walk. Lola Smith. Disappeared when she was
fourteen, back in 2000... "Fuck..." She only looks a little
older. She should look my age. I feel the pull toward a subway
line. I know where it is. For the moment I just sit on the hood
of my car and read her case file. Hmm...
I call personnel next. The cop who was in her case is either one
of my bosses or retired and I find out quickly that he is
retired. I'll have to look him up. For now though, I have a
       train station to investigate.
       -2 hours later
Correction; I have 3 stations to investigate. The first one was
flooded. It was a little too close to the river and erosion
gonna erode. The second was just currently on fire. The fire
department was doing their best to put it out. Apparantly there
was a gang war down there that ruptured a gas line. Luckily it
was one that was old and had been cut off. Finally it brings me
to the last one. I can feel it. She has to be here, or there at
least has to be something here that will lead me to where she
       is.

What Grim finds is a small series of tunnels with stairs leading
down to an abandoned subway platform. There are huge chunks of
rubble and concrete that rest on the tracks, with obvious
scrape-marks indicating that they had been pushed or pulled off
the platform -- something no person could have done alone.
In the clearing is a small photograph of one of Roxbury’s recent
murder victims. It’s stabbed onto the floor with a knife. There
are runes he doesn’t recognize (definitely not High Speech)
smeared in dried blood around the photograph.

Lola had not had much success that evening on the hunt. One
would think the holidays would fill the clubs of Boston with
people ripe for the picking, but no. It’s too cold out. People
are staying indoors, with their families. What little she did
get, she was grateful for, though. She wasn’t starving yet, but
she was aware that she couldn’t sustain too many nights like
       this one in a row.
Thus her thoughts are consumed as she walks down the stairwell
onto the platform. Grim can hear her footsteps echoing down the
tunnel he used to get in here.

Sumerian runes. That's an odd thing to find in a Boston Subway
tunnel. From the look of the ritual whoever did this is trying
to find the killer of the person in the picture. I take a quick
image with my phone. I'll look into it. It's in area. I might
know the detective in charge of the investigation.
That's when I hear the footsteps. I my hand on my weapon and
step back so there will be enough space between us.
I cast an spell, one I know well, that will see through any lies

I say nothing, just watch and wait from the other side of the
platform. When Lola comes into sight I...don't know what to say
at first. So I... "Don't see Sumerian runes that often. It's an
impressive ritual, especially for a thirty-eight year old who
looks only a few years older than the day she disappeared, when
she was fourteen." I can think of a few reasons this could be
the case. I know other things exist, but I've never met them.
"Looks like you were trying to find that kid's killer, am I
       right?" I ask

The voice comes out of nowhere, as far as Lola is concerned, and
it startles her. She jumps into a defensive position
immediately, only to relax when she sees it’s just one human
       with a gun.
       A human she recognizes.
“Kid?” she asks. “The guy in the picture doesn’t look a day
       younger than 24.”
Suppose by comparison to everyone in the room, though, he was a
       kid. Either way, she answers his question with a question;
moving the ball into his court. Her eyes flick toward the exit,
but then fall back on Grim.
She doesn’t know if he needs to die, yet. She can leave any time
she wants to, just like she did before.

"Did you know Detective Barnes never stopped looking for you?" I
ask her. "Tried hard to find you. I think he might still be
looking, even in his retirement." Was I trying to elicit a
response? Not really. It's just something to give me time to
think. "And here you are, using old Sumerian runes to cast a
seeking spell." It really is strange. "Did you find them?" I
ask, this time with genuine curiosity.
"Oh, and can I have my file back. I'm gonna get in a lot of
trouble over that." I add trying to hide my smirk. I let go of
my gun, but leave the clasp open so I can get to it if I need
it. "You can call me Grim." I tell her.

The fact that someone out there didn’t stop looking? It swells a
feeling within her. Even her family had given up, eventually,
and moved on. Oh how she’d considered visiting her family once
she’d killed her Sire, but she didn’t want to endanger them what
with her being blackmailed and thus watched.
“He should stop looking,” she says, even if she doesn’t want him
to. “Better for everyone that way.”
“What’s it to you if I found him?” she asks, again answering his
question with a question. She’s testy, that’s for sure. On edge.
If she were a cat, her ears would be flat and her back arched --
       not hissing, yet.
       But close.
“Would if I could,” she says about the file. “But I already
       delivered it.”

She's a good liar, but I see right through her this time. She's
glad someone is still looking for her. Interesting.
"I'm a homicide detective who works in Roxbury." Of course I
wanna know who killed them. It's literally my job, but...I also
care. I know a lot of cops don't, but I do. Justice matters to
me. Not only that, it's a matter of pride. I solve most of my
cases, and that one had been nagging at me. "Justice for that
kid and his family matter." I wholeheartedly believe this. It's
in my voice, and in my eyes.
       "Who'd you deliver it to?" I ask. She's someone's errand-girl?
       That doesn't seem right.

She’s left with a few options:
One, she can tell the truth about having found the guy. That’ll
eventually place her at the crime scene, though, considering
       she’s the murderer.
Two, she can lie. She’s pretty good at that; but it’d be
pressing her luck. The more you lie, the more you have to
remember about your web of lies.
Three, she can dodge the question.
“He wasn’t a kid,” she insists. That seems important to her.
       Very, very important.
“And I don’t know. Dead-dropped it, it’s probably gone by now.”

She watches him carefully as he works through the casefiles in
       his head.
George and Vinny she knew about -- the other case she knew very
well, but not because it was her. She’d purposefully chosen to
copycat a previously unsolved murder; that killer was still at
large, it gave her a patsy. But Grim had no way of knowing that.
He asks that question, but before she can even decide how to
handle the situation, he’s changing the subject. Good. She can
       focus on his last question.
“Don’t have a choice,” she says, to his question about stealing
from the police. She doesn’t elaborate, though -- if she
admitted she was being blackmailed, that’d just be opening the
doorway to the idea that said blackmail was a Big Deal, and
she’s already in the hole for stealing from the precinct and,
potentially, two murders. Three if things go poorly.
