       ---------------------------------------------------------
I drop the cans into their special padded case, the AKG logo on
the headphone head strap obvious to the eyes. I'm not normally
motivated to buy prestige brands for things like clothing, but
when you invest in professional tools, you go for the best you
can afford. But since a pair of top-of-the-line cans is out of
my league pricewise right now, I'm happy with the midrange AKGs
my mom gifted me when I got my first professional gig doing
       audio production.
Of course, now I'm doing radio instead, but the same principles
apply. The headset has seen better days on the outside, with
scratches on the headstrap and a dulling of the metal bits, but
       they're still perfectly functional within.
I slide the case into my knapsack, and smile. I just finished
voicing my promos for the new job; I'll actually be on-air
starting Monday night. Yes, that means I'll be spending New
Year's Eve on the air. I'm the FNG, of course I'm working the
overnight on New Year's... but hey, I love the overnight shift.
All the weirdos pop out then, and I try to answer my own phones
       as much as possible.
Part of my appeal, I'm told, as a radio personality is my appeal
to the weirdos, because I talk about things like aliens and
cryptids and weird conspiracy theories. I do it because
honestly, the world needs to examine the weird a little more.
The world needs to open its mind, seek more answers. It's a dark
enough place that finding real answers is crucial, and is really
the only key to long-term survival.
I shoulder my knapsack and wave goodbye to Josie, the audio
engineer I was working with, and saunter down to the parking
garage. The studio is on the outskirts of Boston, and my new
(tiny) studio apartment isn't far. I have a Kia, a little hybrid
SUV; I drove cross-country to get here, and shipped all my
possessions in a PODS container. As a result, I actually have
all my shit in place already despite only getting here a week
ago, though I still have some unpacking to do. Mostly
warm-weather clothes and some kitchen stuff.
I'm juggling my keys and my knapsack as I head to the car, its
bright-blue paint garish and bright even against the yellow
overhead lights in the garage. A little chirp shows I've
unlocked it; I slide in, reminding myself that I have to change
to Massachusetts plates soon. Tomorrow, I'll get to the DMV.
Gods, I hate that kind of tedium.
When I pull out, some Masshole almost side-smacks me. I shoot
him the finger and head out, still relying on my cell phone to
       get me back home.
Once I'm inside the apartment, I realize that I need to ask the
landlord if I can repaint. This plain old flat white will not do
it for me. I'm thinking a midnight-blue ceiling fading to
lighter walls. Something that looks like a night sky, really,
made pretty with some hanging Christmas lights.
Speaking of which... this apartment has almost no holiday spirit
at all. I haven't found my decorations yet amidst the boxes,
except for the aforementioned lights. Those, at least, lend a
merry twinkling to the light in the space, and give me a little
       something to enjoy.
Mom and I exchanged wrapped gifts before I left, and promised to
open them over FaceTime together on Christmas Day. I also
received a fat envelope of cash from my grandparents as a gift
for relocation costs; they told me to buy something pretty for
the new place. I'll do that eventually; I need to find where
there are good thrift shops and crafters' markets so I can find
some fun things for decorating. Eventually, I'll want a bigger
place, and if it looks like I'll be able to settle in long-term,
I'll want to buy a place, but for right now, this works.
My books are still mostly in boxes, but since I sorted them
before packing, I can still find what I want. All I have to say
is that I'm glad that I don't have to share this place with
anyone, because I have too much stuff for there to be room for
another person. That's probably unduly optimistic, because when
the hell will I have time to meet people?
Eh, keep things optimistic, Taylor. It's all good. Things will
       happen when they happen.
I picked up simple stuff from the market, so I go about making
myself a sandwich for dinner and grab a beer from the six-pack
in the fridge. A dill pickle sliced into spears, some chips, and
a plate later, and I'm in business for dinner at my two-person
dining table. Dinner, accompanied with some Soundgarden on the
       stereo.
All in all, it's not a bad life. I'm more content than it might
seem. The big move is going to be hooking up with the local
Concilium. I seriously should have pestered my mentor for
contacts, but we had a pretty shitty relationship, so I'm not
sure it would have worked in my favor.
       Soon enough.

       Boxing Day
Stores are open again, so I decided to run out and pick up a few
more things from the store. I made a small turkey on Christmas
Eve, and I've been pretty much eating it since then, so I'm a
little sick of turkey, as hard as that may be to believe.
Breakfast was the remains of the small pecan pie and some
       coffee.
I'm in a strange place, still, so I take the time to hone my
sense of alertness a little, not wanting to get cause unawares
while I do grocery shopping in a supermarket I've seen all of
twice. Maybe it's paranoid, but there are things out there that
like to cause issues for Mages, and as a result? I'm wary and
       trying to be more so.

Well, well, well. After whipping up some quick notes with my
trusty Sharpie and working through some concentration on the
whys and wheres and hows, along with knowledge of how to do this
from my mentor all those months back and a little bit of High
Speech for good measure, I feel confident that nothing's going
to slip past me while I search for pickles and milk and bread.
Yeah, I like pickles, so what?
       So... supermarket. It's a middling-upscale one; I'll want to
find an Aldi or a Trader Joe's sometime soon, probably. Cart,
and here I am. I'd forgotten how much increasing my ability to
react quickly makes me hair-triggerish. The coffee I picked up
on the way in isn't helping, probably, but I will get used to it
again. You know, if I never let it lapse, I'd get used to it a
       lot faster, truth be told.
Guy in the aisle next to me is checking out my ass while
pretending to look for some good apples. The lady two carts
ahead of me is probably fighting off a migraine from her
toddler's screeching, just judging from the throbbing vein in
       her forehead.
And me? I'm just blithely picking out produce as if I had not a
care in the world while noticing every-damn-thing.

She’s not the only person at the supermarket. That much is
obvious! There’s the guy checking out her ass, a guy checking
out his ass, a screaming infant, an exhausted mom, an on-duty
cop, and two (separate, not together) punks giving the cop the
       side-eye.
One of those two punks is, pretty skillfully, shoplifting a
sandwich from the deli; slipping it into his backpack unnoticed.
The other punk is, pretty unskillfully, shoplifting an orange
across the way by snatching it up and making a mad dash for the
       exit.
The cop notices that second punk and takes off, shouting.
       ”Thief! Get back here!”
That’s when Felicity’s peripheral mage sight will go off:
There’s a tingle in the back of her mind, like a spidey-sense
for the supernatural. Or maybe she hears chimes on the air where
there shouldn’t be any, or maybe she gets goosebumps for no
       reason.
However she feels it, it goes off pretty loudly.

       --- End Quote ---
The punk who’s not running for his life pats the cop on the back
on their way by. “Go get ‘em, chief,” he says sarcastically --
slapping a post-it note on the cop’s back with a High Speech
sigil written on it in sharpie.
Like a bad sitcom, the cop’s luck turns sour almost immediately.
The punk he’s chasing makes it out the front door of the
supermarket, but the cop runs headlong into a poor shopper’s
cart, spilling produce everywhere and toppling over like a
       slapstick comedy.
The running punk escapes. The remaining punk purses their lips
and furrows their brow as if to say Oooh, bad luck and returns
       to ‘shopping.’

I'm about to make an order at the deli when I spot a sly guy
slipping food into his backpack. You know the old saying as well
as I do: if you saw someone stealing food, no, you didn't. I do
my part to distract the deli clerk by ordering a few different
things, sliced extra thin, because it takes longer and tastes
       better that way.
And then, it's a Magey Senses Tingling! moment, and I turn my
head casually just in time to see the dude with the orange
bolting for the door. Oh man, you shoulda gone for the filet
mignon or something worth the effort, my friend. Still, he made
his choice, and then a post-it note lands on the cop's back, and
I read the High Speech, and smirk, knowing luck is about to be
really fucking awful for Mista Piggy.
And so it is. I stifle the laugh at the slapstick nature of the
incident, and instead put on a wow, that's gotta hurt
expression. Collecting my cold cuts from the clerk only takes a
moment, and I put them into my cart, then start to meander,
       apparently-aimlessly, toward Punk With Post-Its.
"Slick," I murmur to him, my expression now merry, now that I'm
letting it do what it wants. I grab a jar of dill pickle spears
off the shelf as I'm standing there and put it into my cart,
alongside the loaf of sliced rye and the meat and cheese and
salad fixings and a bag of Honeycrisp apples. I'm sure his
senses are tingling too, and I have the distinct feeling of a
potential kindred spirit. I mean, he's surely not one of the
       stuffy or shiny-good ones, right?
I mean, I'm not a bad person for having a direct connection to
       Pandemonium in my head, right?
       Right?

"Yeah, about a week," I answer, straightforward. As far as I

'Mages' is a small pool of people compared to the population of

I make a quick decision and just offer a soft word: "Felicity,"

“Void,” he says in response. Now that is obviously a shadow name
if ever there was one. Nobody names their kid Void.
He reaches up to pull something down off a shelf, weighing it in

Hey, someone in the emo era might have named their kid Void.
       Maybe. More likely? Shadow name.
I shake my head at the mention of the names, but I also make a
mental note of them. I was thinking I needed to do this just
this morning, over pecan pie and coffee. "I haven't. Yet. Not
100 percent clear on the protocols for doing it, to be honest,
this is my first relocation since."
Since... since what? Since the visit to someplace I remember
only in shadows and the sound of mad shrieking like the middle
of a Pink Floyd song? A week of my life gone in a flash with no
recollection, just shiny new magic powers and the looming
feeling that madness is never far? Since that?
       Yeah, that.
If I'm fresh meat, sure, okay, this will keep things amusing for
someone, and in the process, it might get me some data I
desperately need. I mean, let's be honest, I should have called
my mentor and asked her, but given the givens, I wanted to do
that about as much as I wanted to fuck a dead platypus, which is
       to say: not at all.
"You offering assistance on that front?" I keep my tone
cheerful, playful, warm. I do that well, given what I do for a
       living and all.

Well I’m not sick but I’m not well

“You don’t want me helpin’ out with that,” he grins, amused with
himself for some reason. “Concilium and I get along like oil and
fire. I can hook you up with the local Assembly, though. They at
least put up with me -- won’t hold it against you that you came
       with my name attached.”
Felicity would be familiar with the following:
The Assembly is what the Free Council calls their
caucus-participants. Anyone is invited, everyone gets a vote,
but when the Assembly meets and manages their shit, the Free
Council is in charge of it. The Free Council is also part of the
Concilium proper. The main difference is that the Concilium is
recognized as official by more than just the Free Council, and
the Assembly is mostly just a Free Council structure that
everyone else tolerates as a necessary price for the alliance
between the Free Council and the Diamond.

"Ahhh," I say to him, smiling because my intuition about this
dude had been right on the money. Then again, I mean, look at
him. He fits the profile perfectly, after all. But I'm told I
do, as well. The Sharpie Brigade, let's hear it for us! Yeah,
that includes you lamers in the cheap seats who aren't cheering.
"Sounds like a deal to me," I agree, and then add, more quietly,
"You one of those guys people forget real easy?" That's my
explanation for why he feels comfortable speaking so openly. I,
on the other hand, do not share that particular trait, so I'm
being a little more cautious about what I say. I mean... I'm a
very minor celebrity in some circles. Or I will be, soon enough.
Reach for those dreams, right, Taylor?
"So lemme get you the contact info and vice versa, or did you
mean, like... imminently?" I'm not worried about leaving
groceries in the car -- it's winter in Boston, for fuck's sake,
       nothing's going to spoil.
