Lola stood across the street from the precinct, her form hidden
by the shadow cast by the wall of the alleyway she was hiding
in. Rain pounded down all around her, but hiding under the
fire-escape above her head.
The moon was waning gibbous, not that you’d know it with the
thunderclouds being what they were.

A puddle splashes beneath her worn sneakers, torn jeans
darkening at the ankle as water seeped into them. She wore a
plain white tee with a leather jacket. She didn’t reek like a
homeless person, because public showers exist at places like the
YMCA. But she might look the part, if she wasn’t so damn pretty.
Half of looking like you belong somewhere is just confidence.
The other half is luck. And, as luck would have it, there was a
group of punks being escorted by a police officer through the
building. She fell in line, pretending to be one of them, and
broke off from the group when she passed the door labeled
EVIDENCE LOCKER.
With a near silent creak, she opens the door and closes it
behind herself, entering the room.

Mr. Parker's case wasn't solved yet. It had only happened
yesterday, and while I'd prefer to be at home studying that
damned book, I'm here. Doing my job. I was at my desk, but I
need to look at something in evidence. There was a broken brass
chain on Mr. Parker. It looked like a pocket watch chain. I need
to look more closely. That's what has me entering the evidence
lockup right now.

There's a girl here. One I don't recognize. I smile at her. "New
here?" I ask her. I doubt it. She looks a little too young to
have graduated from the academy, but I've been wrong before. I'm
bigger than her, standing easily six foot one, and weigh into
the mid two hundreds. My service weapon is on my hip, with my
badge on the opposite side also on my hip. I'm wearing jeans,
boots, a button down that's tucked in. There's an obvious bullet
proof vest under my shirt. I look like I haven't shaved in a few
days.

“Yeah,” she says, simply, standing up and tucking her hair
behind her ear. “Looking for case 34-B for my partner, but it
doesn’t seem to be here,” she says.
“Think you could help me find it?”
Good lies have little nuggets of truth in them. In this case,
she is looking for the case file for her partner… it’s just that
her partner is blackmailing her, and she has no idea who he is.
The best lies are ones built on assumptions people make
themselves. In this case, it’s that she’s new here.
The case file is there, she’s just looking in the wrong section
for it.

"Couple things. Your partner shouldn't be sending you in here to
get his case files. couple reasons for that? This is evidence
lockup, not records." I say with a laugh. "The second is, Judy,
the lady in charge of records, is a stickler about people
getting their own files, but you're his partner, so we'll be
able to talk our way past Judy." I say and wave for to follow.
Record is literally right next door to evidence. They share a
wall. I lead her over, and inside the room. Lucky for us? Judy
is on her lunchbreak and Caroline is at the desk. "Hey, Carol,
just grabbing a case file." I say with a smile. She, too busy
playing candy crush on her phone, waves us off.

“Oh,” she says, feeling pretty stupid. The fact that she had
never broken into a police station before was no consolation,
either.
It did, however, make for a convincing embarrassment response.
Lola follows Grim to the record room and repeats the filename,
looking at the boxes.

Nervously, she skims a few of the shelves, but no system seems
to come to her. Either it’s too obscure or she’s too on edge to
see the pattern.
“I, uh.” She swallows. “Sorry. I think I still need help.”
The absolutely best lies aren’t even lies. They’re true.

The city's system is weird. It's a weird version of the Dewey
decimal system that uses flawed math. "34-B is there." I say,
pointing to the back corner of the room, right up against the
wall of the evidence lockup. "The city's system is a weird, bad
version of the Dewey decimal system. They're convinced this is
better. It's not, but you get used to it." I say with a laugh.
"So who's your partner?" I have to ask. There aren't many cops
who's send a newbie into this mess.

One second, Lola is there, reaching up to get the case file.
Then he asks about who her partner is, and she’s faced with a
decision: Either risk answering incorrectly, or dodging the
question entirely.
She freezes just long enough to make Grim suspicious…
And there’s a slight tingle in the back of Grim’s head -- right
in the periphery of his senses, that spidey-sense that pings
whenever magic is afoot. But before he can react, she’s gone.
For a split moment there’s a blur of black and white, and papers
go flying everywhere, but the person he was speaking to has
literally vanished.
