Oh, Morena, honey. I give her a flat stare as she speaks, one
that clearly expresses what I think of her speech. I’m already
angry. But angry words do as much harm as angry blows, so I take
a deep breath, and face her fully, and address her comments in a
calm, steady voice.
“I did not swear nonviolence because I was afraid, Morena.” She
hadn’t said that, and I cut her off if she tries to point that
out. I’ll get there. It’s all of a piece. “Nor did I so swear
because I think violence is wrong. Nature is full of violence.
It overflows with it. I should think, as a witch, that the idea
of someone choosing to balance that excess with restraint is
something that would make sense to you. There are always hands
ready to be bloodied. There are always those willing to hold a
sword, or strike a blow. What I do isn’t about necessity. There
are many reasons for my vow. Balance is one of them. Focus is
another. As I have focused on the living, and on the spirit,
trusting that others, like you, are there to care for what I
must pass by. I appreciate that you shared your viewpoint. I did
not appreciate how.”
With that, I turn away and head for the exit. I’m done here.
“I think I will simply head home, if VIII is willing to share
what I learned with the rest of the group,” I tell them as VIII
returns us to the parking garage, and I head for my car, a
sun-yellow Volkswagon bug. One of the new ones, sadly; the old
ones are almost impossible to find now. “Call me at need.”

I say nothing while she speaks. I know I can be abrasive
sometimes. Was it intentional? No, but it's not important. I
just let her have her say. When she walks off I also happily say
seeya round but I don't actually want to be a bitch right now...

ritual in my sanctum tonight. See if I can learn anything from
this." and I motion to the bag of dead people. After that...I
just walk over to my car. The inside is still pretty fucked up,
but I did recently have public sex with a werewolf in there...
