For a second, I freeze, uncomprehending; my face falls almost by
default into a warm but slightly puzzled expression.
Then I school my face to that warmth and care as what the two
people are saying registers, and it’s a struggle to hide my
anger. I am not violent by nature or inclination. For me, the
vows against violence I have taken were no great sacrifice; I’m
not equipped, mentally or physically, to go around hurting
people.
But every rule has exceptions.
I’m a little surprised I can keep my voice steady. I can hear
the orderlies behind me. They won’t interfere, not now;
communication is always progress, and they’ll be as afraid of
breaking this tableau as I am. Good. Let’s see how far I can
push this. I could cheat, I suppose, but I’m not sure I want to
take the risk. I’m not a Mind mage, and playing with brain
chemistry is dicey at the best of times.
“I’ll be sure to let him know,” I tell them, “if you can help me
find him. He should know how patient you’ve been. You still need
to stay here a while, just to be safe – but I can pass it along.
Did he give you a name to work with?”
It’ll be a Shadow Name, no doubt, and he’s probably already
scrubbed it, but having something to call him will be useful.

She has in her hands a backpack that seems to be full.

Well I will be flat damned before I’ll call this monster Sir.
“Thank you, both,” I tell them, standing, letting my fingers
trail over their cheeks. I have to get out of here. I don’t
think I can get any more out of these two, and even if I could,
I don’t know what questions to ask.
On impulse, I read their bodies again, this time focusing on the
damage, the tracks of scars and marks. They spoke of surgeries,
and that speaks of intent. It could have been lies, yes – but if
there was direct intention…I wish I could see into the mind as
well, but the body will have to tell me what it can.

Finally, I step away, and manage to walk calmly out the door,
though my jaw is set and my left hand is tightly fisted. I close
the door behind me, and as VIII sends the orderlies packing, I
tell her, “They’re doing good work. Please make sure they don’t
get into any trouble over this.”
I reach up and squeeze Morena’s shoulder, then shove my hands in
my pockets and hunch into my parka.
“I need a drink. And a shower. And maybe screwed into a mattress
or three.”

Oh thank fuck. I smile when I see VIII, and look at the
backpack. "Are those the ashes?" I ask curiously, assuming they
are I reach out for them. "I'll need to get these to my
sanctum." I say. Everything's just...easier there. Plus I have
my ritual tools there.
I look at Meadow. "Do you have any skill in the Death Arcana?" I
ask mostly out of curiosity, but also because help makes things
easier. "If not I do have booze in my sanctum, but no shower."
And I don't care how hot she is, she's not bathing in the spring
in my cave sanctum... Some things are sacred...especially when
they are literally sacred springs. It's an offer. She can come
if she wants.

“They won’t,” She says.
“Yes, they are.” She hands the backpack to Morena. Inside it are
about five tupperwares filled with what looks like grey dust
with the occasional tooth or other bone-chip in it.

I nod to VIII, and at Morena’s offer, give a great sigh, even
pouting a bit.
“One out of three will have to do,” I agree. “No. Death is…not
my domain. It’s not something the Circle works with. It may be
worth looking into, in time, but I’ve focused my studies on the
magic of life and growth, and spirit-talking. Those two in
there…the physical damage was already healed, and I can do
nothing about the scars. The two spoke of surgery being done,
and the context implied was that whoever did this to them was
preparing them for Awakening. Or so they believed. I was able to
trace the damage done, and it looks as though they were
tinkering with their systems to increase resistance to shock and
stress. If I had more time with them – a lot more time – I might
be able to tell exactly what was done and figure out if it can
be reversed, and the best means of doing so. But given what I
heard in there, paired with a few assumptions – I don’t think
the killings were intended. I think the victims he killed were
either accidents or failures of whatever he is trying to do.
He’s got medical training, I can tell you that much. He couldn’t
have accomplished what he was trying to do without it. You
should get someone in here with experience in the mind. That
might tell us even more.”
I take a deep slow breath.
“I’m not a fighter. If it comes down to a fight, I can do
battlefield healing, but I can’t strike blows. I can take no
action that intentionally leads to direct harm. But this…person
is out there, using science intended to heal and restore, to
destroy. If I weren’t already committed to this…” I shrug,
helplessly, and my vision blurs as hot, angry tears fill my
eyes. “Well. I’m all-in now.”

"The study of life and spirit is good. It's mostly where my own
focus lies, but nature isn't only what lives and breathes. It's
death and the matter left over after life and the spirit have
gone." That's where we differ in styles. She's a healer and I
exist to serve and protect nature. At least that's how I see it.
"Sometimes violence is the only correct answer." I don't care
that she's a pacifist. I am not, and like nature I can be cruel.
I look at VIII. We need to get back to Boston now." I say and
start walking toward the door. Corbin lands on my shoulder when
I exit. That makes me think... "Did you see anything interesting
while we were in there?" I ask the bird, just in case he was
being uncommonly watchful.

VIII writes down everything that Hausos is saying on her
clipboard, writing incredibly quickly for someone with such
impeccable handwriting. She nods along with each and every
point.
“Hopefully, this can be resolved without a fight,” she says.
“Personally I think he should be held accountable for his
crimes. Killing him is a last resort.”
“Back to Boston it is,” she says. “Just follow me.”
She leads the pair back to the car, where it pulls out of the
parking garage and drops them off next to their cars in the
parking lot outside the boston airport.
“I’ll see that this intelligence finds its way to the others,
and the Justicar,” She says. “Is there anything else you need
before I leave?”
