Solomon thinks it over a bit. "I could put a call out among the
spirits. If I can manage a wide enough net, at least one of them
would likely be able to provide some information in exchange for
a bit of Essence," he suggests.
Even if they're on the other side of the Gauntlet, spirits are
nosy things, and Scelesti always create strange Resonances. And
they tend to dislike Gulmoths running around anyway.
He downs the rest of his wine, setting the glass aside for the
moment, to gauge the reactions of the others.

Spirits, that piques my interest. "I can probably help with
that. I know a thing or two about dealing with spirits and two
witches are better than one." At least I assume that's the case.
The only other witch I've worked with is Asher. "Or I can see if
any of the city born wildlife have seen anything. You'd be
surprised what rats and pigeons notice." I add.

Seems like a lot of overlap. I swirl my scotch in my glass and
make space for the large feline, making a clicking sound with
my tongue. The cat floats up, getting a slight whuff from me
because that’s a big kitty, and I begin stroking its fur gently
as I sip my scotch and think.
“If we all have facility with the spirit realm – and it sounds
like we do – that area seems well covered. If he’s left living
victims behind, I might be able to get access to them; I can get
into hospitals and ERs as a volunteer. But that’s what we can
do. We can strategize later; VIII is offering intelligence, and
we should take advantage. Do we have any name to work with, or
any sort of description? The picture is good, but it doesn’t
give colors or habits or attitudes. Is he leaving any living
victims behind, or just bodies? Do you have a place for us to
start?”
There’s also more to consider here. Morena isn’t wrong, but
until we know what questions to ask, that’s shooting in the
dark.
“Forgive me for asking the obvious, VIII, but is there enough to
tell us if there is any sort of connection or pattern to the
victims? Some way to possibly get ahead of this guy, if we can’t
track him down.”

They watch Caesar get lifted into the air with a raised eyebrow.
Luckily the cat is used to magic even if he's not a familiar.
Rebus finished their scotch before adding anyway. "You said
'rescue' his victims... I assume this means there is reason to
think at least some of them are still alive? How much time do
they have?"

“The few living victims he’s left behind are soulless,” VIII
says to Meadow. “I can arrange for a visit to the mental
hospital where they’re being cared for under the guise of mental
health issues. That will be in Portland, though. There’s two
survivors there, and we don’t know of any other ones.”
“There hasn’t been any established pattern in his victims that
we’ve noticed, but we likely don’t have the full picture because
we don’t find many victims in his wake. He’s good about cleaning
up.”
“We don’t know how long he keeps his victims on-hand,” she says
to Rebus. “Again, we’ve only found a few so far. There are a lot
of disappearances every day in Boston and he’s not the only
monster out there making those disappearances happen.”

"Sounds like a ritualized effort could be useful, then," he
says, given the number of other mages there claiming to have
proficiency with spirit magic.
Though, on that note, "What areas around here, specifically,
have people disappeared from? Not necessarily where they
vanished, unless you have that information, but certainly 'last
seen' or even just where they live? That would help direct the
effort," he asks VIII. "Or if we don't have that, where was the
picture taken exactly?"
Awakened magic can only affect an area of a certain size, after
all, so they need a starting point, at least.

Then I open my mouth and show off my inexperience. "Couldn't we
use the picture we have of him as a sympathetic connection?" As
soon as I say it I realize that if we could someone would have
already. This guy is a whole ass monster. I have the picture of
our target the bird left with me in my hand. I had fished it out
of my purse.

“I can go to Portland for a day,” I agree, nodding. “And I can
take along whoever wants to come with. I have some flex in my
budget, I can make room for a couple of plane tickets.” I don’t
mind putting my money to this cause. I’m not really rich, but I
am aware enough to know I’m a few steps up from your average
college student. I’m also one of the vanishingly few med school
graduates not sunk up to my eyeballs in debt.
Solomon gets a wicked grin in response to his talk of rituals.
“I think you’ll love the way I do ritual work,” I purr at him.
At Morena’s question, I reach over and lay my hand on hers,
squeezing lightly. My hands are very warm, and soft. “VIII told
us that he’s manage to scrub his sympathetic links, dear,” I
tell her. “But it’s not a bad thought. I haven’t any experience
with that sort of magic, but maybe there’s another way.”
I had to either leave off petting Caesar or put down my drink to
reassure Morena, and I wasn’t about to put down my drink, so
Caesar chooses that moment to make his displeasure known by
ramming his head into my chin. He’s a hefty chunk of feline, and
I blink for a moment, startled, before giggling and scratching
him under the chin.
