At some point in Sam’s day, she will have been finished with a
task. It will have been something rewarding and important: Work,
sex, cooking a meal, etc.
She has just finished that task and has earned a small break of
personal time. Maybe she’s planning on a nap, maybe she’s
planning on a snack. Maybe it’s just time to scroll her phone
endlessly.
Whatever it is, her personal task has yet to begin. She’s in the
transitional phase between tasks, right in that nicely-timed
lull where distractions can happen.
That’s when there’s a knock at the door, or at a nearby window,
or something similar.
When she answers the door, or looks out the window, a large crow
is there to greet her. It tilts it’s head at her, curiously.

Tap...tap...taptaptap...on the window of my apartment... I look
up and see a pacing bird rap tap tapping on my window... Quoth
the raven, nevermore...
Corbin too notices it. His words hold a warning tone. "It's
another witch." He says to me. I look from him to the bird
outside. This could be bad, or good. Not many people in the
community know where I live. That's on purpose.
I get up and walk to the window, opening it. "Come in." I say to
the bird. "Would you like a drink?" I ask it, hoping it will
take a human form as I walk toward the kitchenet. It's a small
studio apartment, but it's mine.

The raven hops in, and nods. “That would be good, thank you,” It
says. “No alcohol, please. In a bowl.”
“Hello Corbin,” the crow says to the familiar as the drink is
being prepared.
“Thank you.” The crow dips its beak into the bowl, drinking the
drink and not getting drunk no matter how much it drank. Because
there’s no alcohol, you see. The Crow had planned for this.
“I am here on behalf of the Council,” it finally says. “They
believe you have what it takes to be of assistance to the
Concilium.”

Lucky for the bird, I have no alcohol at the moment. Not that'd
I'd have given them alcohol. I don't know this crow enough to
want to poison it. I place the bowl in front of the bird, and
then flop down into the big, old, recliner. I look tiny in it.
I listen as the bird talks. Corbin watches as the bird talks. It
knows Corbin's name. That means it probably knows mine too, at
least my shadow name. "The Concilium things I can be of
assistance?" I ask kind of incredulously. I avoid these people,
but apparently they've been keeping an eye on me. Did they see
me fuck that werewolf yesterday? Weird...
Still... "What's the job, and who will I be answering too?"
Because that actually matters to me. Mysterium leadership can
be... exhausting...

“You would be answering to the Justicar,” the crow says.
The Justicar was the right-hand of the Council, their enforcer.
If you did the no-no black magic, the Justicar would hunt you
down. If you broke the law, the Justicar would see that you were
at least reprimanded. In Boston, the Justcar was known as The
First. She was part of the First Nations and had been Justicar
for over a hundred years. She was a Thyrsus who held membership
in the Adamantine Arrows.
“And there’s a reward, too. Access to the Vault.”
The Vault was well known to Boston mages. The old blood, old
money that ran the Concilium had run the Concilium for
centuries. Part of how that political power structure remained
in place was controlling the sole access point to the Vault.
What was in the Vault?
Artifacts. Entities. Magic items, tomes of incredible mystic
power. Anything that was deemed unsafe for public consumption.
Which meant that the Vault wasn’t just a source of a lot of
magical knowledge and secrets -- it was the source of the Good
Stuff. Access to that would go a long way toward empowering a
mage to accomplish any goals they might have.
“As for the job itself, we should start with the basics…”
The crow retched, at that point, and hawked up a crumpled ball
of paper.
“Have you seen this man?” the crow asks, nudging the paper
toward Sam.

Answering to the Justicar made sense, so I don't question it.
However...the reward? Access to the Vault? [I]That[/I] has me
leaning forward in my chair. Access to the Vault could get me a
lot closer to a few of my goals. I scooch forward in the chair
and look closely at the image the bird presents.
"Never seen him before." I say, looking up from the picture to
the bird. I know Corbin hasn't seen him either because the
bird's been with my for it's entire existence. Asher literally
created him. "Who is he?" I ask, looking back at the picture
again, trying to memorize his face, incase I need to remember
it.
"Tell me about him. Why does the Concilium want to find him?"
There's a million questions I could ask, but those seem the most
important to my mind.

experimentation on Sleeper souls, experimentation on Awakened
souls, kidnapping and torture of sleepwalkers who work for the
concilium, consorting with Gulgoths, practicing abyssal magic,
and his crimes against sleeper laws are innumerable as they are
irrelevant to the Concilium’s general pursuit of him.”
“He’s wanted in several conciliums for crimes against humanity
and existence itself. This photo was taken by a security camera
in a gas station not far from Boston so we believe he has
returned and is operating in this area.”
“You are one of several Awakened we are recruiting to form a
small team to track down this man and put a stop to his plots,
whatever they may be, as well as hopefully rescue and tend to
any of his victims that can be saved.”

Holy shit. This guy sounds like a real piece of crap... What
would drive something to that kind of extreme? What could hurt
someone's mind so badly that it made them capable of these
things... What made the Concilium think I have the mystical
chops to face someone like this?
"So basically you want me and a couple others to hunt down what
sounds like the witch equivalent of Josef Mengele."
Yeah...that...holy fuck... "I'm not saying no." Not that I think
they'd accept a no. "Just...why me?"
Corbin interjects "Because you're wicked smart, I imagine." The
bird has no idea either. He's just trying to make me feel like
this is a good idea...

destiny itself whom I should recruit.”
“So I can count you in?”
When Sam agrees, the crow nods.
“Many thanks. A Herald will be in touch with the time and place
for you to meet the rest of the team.”
