She nodded and smiled a little when the woman said she was
'Masons kid' "Yeah that would be me." When Tracy visibly relaxed
she relaxed a little more herself tucking her hands into the
pockets of the leather jacket she was wearing. "Thanks. It... it
has been hard."
She sighed and lifted a hand running her fingers through her
hair and pushing it back. "I know. I just... I can't help that
think one of these unsolved cases he was working on is the
reason he was killed."
When Tracy volunteered to share her file in exchange for her
fathers she perked up and smiled. "That would be great! I have
the file in my car. the paper version. I have another copy on my
computer at home."
She turned and headed for the door. "When and were would you
like to meet?"

“I’m free now,” I say. “There’s a diner down the road from here
that serves a pretty mean cup of coffee, if you’re interested.”
Really, helping Mason’s daughter out is the least I could do.
The department saddled him with a lot of the cases I had to
cover up for the Uratha, and he was gracious enough to work with
me on that.
I feel a little responsible for what happened to him. I can’t
help but think that maybe his willingness to look the other way
for me was what got him killed.
“I’d just need to swing by the precinct and grab the file.”

"Perfect! I will never say no to a good cop of coffee or a
couple of them." She pulled out her smartphone "Whats the name
of the place i can google maps directions for it." Once she got
he address she nodded and tucked her phone away. "I will go
ahead and meet you there."
She blinked and then laughed softly. "I never asked your name.
Too caught up int he murder i guess. Sorry about that. " After
getting Tracy's name she turned and headed out the door, and
back toward her car.
"See you at the diner."

After escorting the civilian off the crime scene, I make a quick
stop at the precinct, collect two files and then we’re off to
the Lobster’s Claw diner.
The little bell rings overhead as I enter, see Camryn at a
table, and walk over to her. I’m carrying a big white box under
one arm.
I work here a lot. I don’t get any weird looks from the wait
staff or the host.
“Okay,” I say, setting the box down in the seat next to me as I
sit down at the table. “Dinner’s on me. I worked with your dad,”
I say. “He and I both get saddled with the weird ones.”

She had picked a booth toward the back, telling the waitress
that someone would be joining her, and ordering coffee which she
then added cream and sugar too. She was on her second cup by the
time Tracy arrived. Looking up from her phone she waved amd set
her phone down.
"Hi again."
She looked curiously at the box, and once Tracy was sitting she
slid an old file folder across the table to her. Tracy would
recognize David's handwriting.
"When you told me your name i recognized it. Dad mentioned you a
few times. Said that you were one of the good ones. That you
helped to protect people like he did."
"I think the case you have now, and this one." She tapped the
folder." Count as weird ones, and i think they are connected."
She sipped her coffee.
"Detective Devlin.. when i was there something about to struck
me as strange, but i couldn't quite put my finger on what."

“I try to,” I say. “It’s hard. The department has a real
corruption problem, and if you don’t play ball you can wind up
dead or worse. That’s what made your dad stand out; he was a
good guy.”
The waitress -- a woman named Helga -- comes by, and I order a
coffee. We’ll worry about food later.
For now, Mason’s kid wants to talk shop and I’m more than happy
to oblige, workaholic that I am.
“A lot doesn’t add up about this case,” I say as she hands me
the file. I go over it.
“Perp left the vic’s kid alive even after the kid saw the perp.
Witnesses claim the perp came in the window, but nobody could
have climbed that fire escape. Nothing was taken from the
apartment. It smacks of a professional hit, but a pro probably
would have used a gun with a silencer and not left a witness
alive, kid or otherwise.”
Yeah, looks like Mason’s notes provide a similar M.O. Shotgun
blast to the head while sleeping in the middle of the night.
I knew I’d seen this before, somewhere.

She smiled when Tracy called her dad a good guy though the smile
was a little sad. She smiled at Helga as the waitress came back
over and refilled her cup for the third time. She should
probably slow down or she wasn't going to be able to sleep at
all. She wrapped her hands around the cup and watched Tracy as
she went over the file.
"This isn't the only file dad brought home, but all of them have
something strange about them. Something that he couldn't just
let go for some reason. She went a little wide eyed when Tracy
mentioned that there had been a kid that was left alive. "Oh man
that poor kid. I mean it is great that they won't hurt but
loosing a parent especially if you have seen it... it is
terrible. My mom is a social worker. if you need her contact
information to help the kid just let me know."
"maybe the kid was left alive to send a message or something?"
She sounded doubtful. "Did they seen the murderer at all?"
She chewed her lip. "I am good with computers, I mean really
good. If you want me to dig up all of the victims dirt little
secrets I can do that."

“CPS is handling the kid,” I say with a nod. “If I need to I’ll
talk to your mom and get everything settled. He’ll be looked
after, for sure.”
“I don’t think so. The kid said the perp apologized to him
before climbing out the window. Described the perp as a pretty
girl with black hair.”
I think on that. “Actually, that might be good. Hit up the
computers and do the computer things, then get back to me with
everything you’ve found? I bet we can find something that ties
these two cases together if you do that.”
Unless we’re dealing with a copycat killer. Not unheard of in
this world of darkness city. But I don’t voice that thought
aloud; it’s better to keep high spirits when you work this gig.

"I am glad to hear that, about the kid. Hopefully he has other
family that can look after him."
"Wow the apologized tot he kid, and they were a woman" She
blinked a couple of times. Don't women usually choose less
violent ways to kill people, like poison's?" She smiled a
little." Sorry to much ID channel, and not enough Criminal
Justice classes. I am working on it."
She nodded. "It will easier with the current victim. If you give
me the name of the other victim i can go digging in that
direction too. That will be harder though it has been a year all
their social media accounts have probably been disabled. I can
look though."
"What is your email i can send you my findings that way, unless
you would rather just meet again when i have something?"
"Detective Devlin, I just want to say thank you for not shooting
or arresting me." She smiled.

“Statistically, yes, women tend to kill less violently. The
exception tends to be crimes of passion, like in the heat of a
lover’s quarrel or something similar. But this was clearly
premeditated,” I muse aloud. “It’s so weird.”
“George Lopez,” I give her the current victim’s name. “And with
these weird cases, I find the less we write down the better. The
truth of the matter is that the department doesn’t like weird,
they like results. So I try to deliver on that front.”
I smile back. “No problem,” I say.
