I’ve eaten about half my chicken sandwich when she gets to your
place or mine? and I almost choke.
I hadn’t expected that line to work!
Shit! Now I gotta put my money where my mouth is. And hope we go
the whole night without my powers flaring up, otherwise my
secret’s blown and she’ll be terrified of me. Or stalk me to
hell and back, who knows -- she’s crazy enough to tell people
she was raised by a vampire.
Still, though. No turning back now.
“My apartment isn’t in the best part of town,” I confess. “But I
have electricity, heating, and it’s not haunted -- so we could
do that?”

Since it's looking like they might be moving ahead with things,
Casper hurried up with her burger and fries. She could tell that
her forwardness was a surprise even though Lucy brought it up
first. One more eccentrism on her part. It was too bad that she
wasn't recruiting material. but oh well, she could still be
friend and fuck buddy material.
"Your place sounds perfect." She laughs a little. "Will we
disturb your father?" She didn't want any of that sort of
stickiness, after all. If he was there, that could be awkward.
Once she was done with her food, she pulled out a bill like she
had for the clerk at the convenience store- this time it was
obviously a single Benjamin. She waited for Lucy to be ready to
go, then flagged down Helga for a final farewell before they
left.

I finish up my chicken sandwich as she finishes up her burger
and fries. I’d wolf it down but I don’t want to look too eager,
even though I am too eager.
“Dad? Nah. He stays in his room, behind a closed door. We
shouldn’t even bump into him unless we’re unlucky.”
When she pulls out the benjamin, I raise my eyebrows.
“You sure you don’t want to split the bill?” I ask. “It’s no
trouble.”
If she insists, I’ll let her pay. She did ask me to dinner,
after all. And I agreed.

She smiled and shook her head. "It's fine, I asked you here.
Maybe if you ask me to hang out sometime, I'll let you pay.
Besides, I like treating."
As they headed out, Casper took Lucy's hand. Hers was a little
chill, but she did have it wrapped around her sprite for a bit.
"Oh, ok. Good. I'd hate to disturb him," she replied, obviously
relieved. She didn't think much more on it. When they got out in
the lot, she looked from one vehicle to the other. "Is there
parking at your place? I'd like to follow you there, if there
is."

I hold her hand. Damn she’s cold. I take both my hands and rub
them together with her hand between them, like I’m rubbing
sticks together to start a fire. Hopefully I can warm her up a
little bit!
“There’s guest parking on the side of the apartment building,
your SUV should fit,” I say. “I can lead you there easily
enough.”
I give her a little kiss on the cheek as we reach her SUV, and
scuttle over to my motorcycle, climb on and lead her out of the
parking lot. It’s still dark, foggy and drizzling out.
I don’t speed, and I keep a good eye on whether or not she’s
behind me. In this weather that would be stupid. All it takes is
one deer bolting in front of me --

I try and veer out of the way but I hit the deer head-on, and
both the bike and I go flying. I hit the pavement and the bike
crashes down nearly on top of me! The bike is a wreck, and so am
I.

She was going slowly, and was glad Lucy set the pace. She was on
her nerves, but not alert enough. The deer comes out of nowhere,
and it was all she could do to not hit the bike and it's driver.
The SUV ended up in the ditch. Her airbag popped, and she
hurried out of the vehicle before taking stock of herself.
She ran to Lucy's side, "Oh my god! What the hell, I didn't know
you could run into them this far in town!"
She knelt, shaking, and trying to move the bike off Lucy. "Hey,
you ok?"

“Stupid deer,” I groan as Casper lifts the motorcycle off of me.
“Totally cockblocked me--ugh,” I grunt in pain.
“I don’t think so,” I say when she asks if I’m okay. “I can’t
feel my legs.”
I look down at myself. Yup. Knees aren’t supposed to bend that
way -- definitely broken, at the very least. No telling what
internal damage might have been done.
“You don’t happen to have any healing powers, do you?” I ask
sarcastically, leaning back on my elbows so that I can try to
sit up. That gets a stuttered gasp of pain out of me. Yep.
Definitely screwed the pooch on this one. Thank god I was
wearing a helmet!

Seeing her like this was worrying. Casper pulled out her phone
and dialed 0-1-1. "No, baby, you're going to be on a single bed
in the ER tonight I'm afraid." She gave a short account of what
happened to the operator, and a pretty good set of directions .
She took Lucy's hand. "Is there a shop you'd prefer your bike
get sent to?"
"Are you in pain?" She looked worryingly at Lucy's legs again.
"I can call your father, too. I could probably get in to see
you, but they'll need permission for surgery. I'm so sorry." Now
that help was on the way, she checked herself and discovered a
minor cut above one eye, which she tried to wipe clean on her
jacket pocket. "I'm so sorry."

I wince. “Any shop will do,” I say through gritted teeth.
“Yeah,” I say when she asks if I’m in pain. “For someone who
can’t feel their legs, my legs sure are killing me, you know?”
Ow. Laughing hurts too. I should stop that.
“Don’t be sorry,” I say with a pained smile. “You already saved
me from robbers and fed me dinner, just because we don’t get the
hat trick tonight doesn’t mean you did anything wrong,” I smirk.
“Here,” I say, fishing out my phone and--
--well, there goes that. My phone is trashed.
“Uh. My dad’s number is, umm…” I grunt and shift my weight.
“Three six eight, eight six two, four four five eight,” I say.
“I think.”

Casper nods and calls two tow trucks to pick up the bike and SUV
and take them to a particular shop she must already do business
with. "I'll wait here till they get your bike," she promised.
Then she looked over her shoulder. "And my SUV."
She dialed the number she was given, and waited for someone to
pick up the phone. "What's your dad's name?" She asks softly,
looking around as she thinks she can hear sirens... or is that
just wishful thinking?
"I'll make sure to leave my number either with your stuff in
your room or with your dad. This won't be our last chance," she
laughs a little lightly. "I'll give you updates on the bike as I
get them."
