“I’ve never tried that before,” I say. Which is technically
true. Never done it with tarot cards. I’ve wrecked more than a
few poker tables, though.
I can tell her what the cards are. But I don’t know if I want to
out myself. I pass off my nervousness as excitement.
The cutting and shuffling finishes, and she pulls the first
card.

She clicked her tongue and looked at the card. "Close," she said
without revealing it, but her giddiness isn't as present. She
sets the card down on the table, and draws another. "Try again?"
She says hopefully, and with a supportive smile. She really
wants this girl to be the real deal... and admit what? She was
not half as close to the guy as Casper herself had been.
She really needed a new friend, is all.

She looked at the card like she wished it was the Moon, and
started trying a different tactic. "Have you ever had prescient
feelings before?" She asked jovially. "I have, but not really
psychic. I couldn't do this, for example." She set the card
down.
"Most of my gifts are well, sensual. Attracting people, even
when I don't know I'm doing it, or with little action of my own.
Can you believe that?" She wasn't about to own up to being any
sort of vampire, that was something even she knew to keep a lid
on.
She drew another card, almost as an afterthought, "Guess this
one?"

Oh yeah. She’s off her rocker. Either that or she’s psychic like
I am, but she’d be the first psychic I’ve met since the day I
was born. So odds are against me, there.
Still, though. I’d pay good money to find out what she meant by
sensual gifts.
That thought sends a massive blush across my face and I clear my
throat, leaning back into the booth.
“Sensual gifts? Like… sex stuff?” I say, grinning. “Do tell!”
“Uhmm… eight of pentacles,” I guess. It’s actually the four of
cups.

She squinched up her nose and giggled. "Yes, sex stuff. I
figured that would get your attention. Well, I'm sure the reason
you're still sitting here even though I've been blabbering
insane shit is because I'm like the hottest person you know."
She flips her hair slowly. "That's a start. What do you think?
Search your thoughts, it's true, isn't it?"
Somehow she doesn't sound like she's being vein, but rather that
she wants Lucy to believe. She absently put the card on the
table with the others, but didn't pick another one. Instead she
laced her fingers together in front of her.
About now is when the waitress came back with their order.

these:” I make a fist and tuck my elbow in toward my waist.
“And then freak out because you’re way, way out of my league,” I
laugh.
“Thank you Helga,” I say as the food is delivered. I got a
milkshake and a chicken sandwich. I help myself to the milkshake
first.
“So. Other than being impossibly attractive, what else can you
do? Gotta be something special, being raised by a ghost, a
werewolf, a vampire and all. Right?”

She laughs lightly and smoothes her hair. "Well, I'd be pretty
lucky too, you're such a cutie." She said demurely. After giving
Helga a dazzling smile and a warm thanks, she dove into the
burger first, managing not to get toppings all over herself.
"I'm not sure why they did what they did. I didn't know what
they were growing up. It all came out in the deed and all that
after I turned eighteen." A thoughtful follow up bite. "My
raising was pretty basic, no electricity, no public school, we
did have running water though. I was the weird kid that lived in
the haunted house. Not many friends in the long term."
"What about you? You say you moved around a lot?"

“You can be as lucky as you want,” I finally blurt out. Yup it’s
out there now, can’t stop it from coming back to bite me.
…Did I say that? I guess I might have. “Yeah, but not because I
was a military kid or anything. We were just too poor, and my
mom and dad wound up on the wrong side of every landlord we ever
had. I guess that makes them the common denominator, eh?”
I shrug and pick up the chicken sandwich.
“Things are better now, though. I take care of dad; mom’s not in
the picture anymore. But at least we’ve settled down.”

After about half the burger, Casper switches to her fries. Lucy
blurting things out like that makes her smile. "Well, that makes
things easy for me, that we're on the same page." She winked.
She was definitely glad they had that exchange.
"So, we don't have to have any exchange about whether to go
dancing or what have you. Just a nice straight forward 'your
place or mine?'" She pushed her hair over one shoulder.
"I do have to say, though, one, my house is just outside city
limits, and two, this would be a one time thing. Still good?"
