I shake her hand. I pay up for the snacks and eagerly lead the
way out to the front of the gas station -- and pack the snacks
into my motorcycle’s saddlebags.
“You need to get into your own car, or you want a ride with me?”
I ask, climbing onto the motorbike and patting the back seat.
I’m not about to say no if she decides she wants to ride with
me, now am I? Why yes, I’d absolutely like the pretty lady’s
arms around my waist.

She follows along until Lucy has her things put away. "Oh no,
I'll follow you. I don't want to just leave my car here," she
smiled with a quirked corner of her mouth. Then she turned back
to the other side of the lot and went to a large SUV that
doesn't look to new or fancy, but is a freakin SUV.
She waited for Lucy to lead the way, and parked next to her at
the truck stop. She jumped out- she was very short and the sight
was simply silly. She giggled a bit and walked with Lucy step by
step into the restaurant, letting the other woman choose table
or booth.

The diner is dimly lit and the sounds of clanking dishes meets
us. There’s a few patrons here, but not many. We’re seated and I
choose a booth.
The menus are delivered. I thank the waitress -- a heavyset
woman in a stained yellow-and-white uniform dress who introduces
herself as Helga -- and we get our drinks. I order a diet coke.
I hadn’t planned on a date when I got out of bed this morning,
but here we are!
“So,” I say. Making conversation isn’t new to me, and I don’t
find it awkward. “Tell me about yourself, Casper! What’s a
pretty lady like you with balls of steel doing in a greasy spoon
diner like this, anyways?”
I smirk.

Casper is super friendly to Helga, and it's just possible that
after a short conversation with the woman, Helga has a slight
bounce in her step that wasn't there before. Nothing significant
was even said. She ordered a sprite for herself.
Once Helga went off to give them time to look over menus, she
opened hers and considered it carefully. As Lucy spoke up, she
was granted Casper's full attention. She smiled brightly, "I
could ask the same of you! Most people would be afraid to be in
public after such a close call." She raised and eyebrow, then
giggled.
"All I'm looking for here is a burger and fries, and an
insightful conversation. What about you?" She asked coyly and
sipped her sprite.

“Naw, it wasn’t that close! I had you there to protect me, even
if I didn’t know it,” I laugh. “You should have seen yourself.”
I pantomime holding the gun, pointing ‘it’ at her.
”Is that a siren I hear?”
I lean my cheek on my hand, and my elbow on the table, letting
my head tilt to the side as I look at her. God she’s pretty. Did
I mention she’s pretty?
…what? Oh she asked me a question. Right! Sorry. I’m gay and
useless tonight.
“Oh, I don’t know. I’m up for anything,” I say with a wink.
“Adventure and escapades, something to break the monotony of the
work-eat-sleep-work-eat-sleep grind, you know?”

She giggles, covering her mouth with her hand. "You make it
sound like some TV drama. Which is good, because that is exactly
where I drew inspiration." She doot doot dooted the Charlie's
Angel's theme and pointed her own make believe gun in three
directions before pretending to blow away the gun smoke and
giggle.
"Up for anything, hm? Maybe you'd like to play a card game with
me?" She reached into a coat pocket and pulled out a drawstring
silken bag and set it before her on the table. "Do you know what
a tarot deck is?"

“It was so cool!”
I doot doot doot the song with her, as soon as I recognize which
one it is.
I eagerly watch as she places the deck down on the table.

“Oooh, I like games,” I say with a smile. “My mom used to read
tarot for folks when I was little,” I say. “She used to put food

She looked positively illuminated. "Oh, so you're familiar with
tarot. This must be my lucky night." She slips the cards out of
the bag and settles then on the table before beginning to
shuffle. "I'm going to be up front with you. I think Lady Luck
is on our side tonight. So, your mother introduced you to the
occult? We have something in common there. I was raised by a
ghost, a werewolf, and a vampire. It was an eccentric
childhood."
Now she paused to see how Lucy would digest that tidbit of
information. She was used to people laughing it off or calling
her crazy... so she plays to the stereotype.

I pause for a second. She’s not lying or screwing around, she
actually believes that she was raised by a ghost, a vampire, and
a werewolf.
Is she crazy? Maybe. Is she pretty? Certainly. …I’ve chased
weirder girls before. Who am I kidding?
“Yeah, mom was into all sorts of stuff,” I say, brushing past
her big crazy upbringing bomb of a conversation piece like it
was totally normal. I can play along, for now. Let’s see how far
down the rabbit hole goes, and if there’s a rabbit hole at the
end of it… heh heh heh I’m twelve years old.
Well. I’m 22. But I never grew up.
“She did tarot, tea leaves, fortune telling of all kinds. I
never picked it up myself but I’m loosely familiar with it all.”
I lean forward a little bit, a sparkle in my eyes.
“Why? You want to read my cards?”

She smiled and shook her head. "No, I want you to read my
cards." She cut the deck and set it in the middle of the table.
"It's not an everyday reading though. I will draw the card, and
I want you to tell me what card it is. Have you done that
before?" She arched a brow.
"I am really into the occult, like really into the occult.
Probably because of my raising, but also because I have a lot of
money and not a lot to keep me occupied. Now..." She drew a
card, holding it up back to Lucy. "Can you tell me what card
this is?"
