       Lancea Sanctum Elder
       ---------------------------------------------------------
The police tape around the crime scene keeps the herd at bay --
most of them, anyways. The apartment is blocked off to all who
       lack a badge.
All who lack a badge and who lack Vitae, anyways.
As the police and squints bustle around, taking photos and
marking evidence, The Father stands there, invisible to the
cops, looking at the now-headless body of his dead lover.
Well, as close to lover as The Father could come, anyways. Rumor
in Elysium is that he had a mortal boy-toy, but that implied a
lack of affection that The Father had been struggling to
maintain. George had been more than a toy. The Father had even
considered ghouling him, adding George to his collection of
       close companions.
That wasn’t going to happen, now. Someone had snuck into the
mortal’s apartment on the third floor and blown his head off
with a shotgun in his sleep.
The Elder of the Lancea Sanctum had been robbed of something
that had been helping him find himself again, after all these
centuries. Whoever had done this was going to pay dearly.
Just as thoughts of vengeance bubble to the surface, his phone
rings. He pulls it from his pocket and picks up the call.
       “Hello,” he says, simply.
“Got another body from your list of off-limits folks,” the voice
on the other end of the line says. He recognizes it as
Bartholomew, one of the cops he keeps on his payroll. “It’s
Vinny. Same as George. No head, offed in his sleep with a
       shotgun blast.”
“I’ll be right there,” The Father says, and hangs up. He didn’t
need to be told where to go. Vinny was his ghoul, he knew
       precisely where to find him.

       Lancea Sanctum Elder
       ---------------------------------------------------------
It doesn’t take long to make it to Vinny’s place. There’s a
single patrol car parked in front of the condo, implying that
Bartholemew called The Father first and hasn’t called in the
       body just yet.
The Father enters the apartment, dress shoes making no sound as
he walks across the cheap linoleum flooring toward the bedroom.
Those footsteps stop when they reach the bloodsoaked shag
carpeting that makes up the bedroom floor.
“Any witnesses?” he asks, calmly - though his tone betrays a
cold fury that leaves Bartholemew less than thrilled to have to
stay in the same room as him.
“None,” Bartholomew answers. “But the shooter didn’t police
their brass. I can run the shells through ballistics --”
“--no need,” The Father says, bending over and picking up a
       shell. “I’ll handle it.”
       “Okay, you’re the boss, Father.”
The Father scans the room and heaves an irritated sigh. He was
definitely being targeted, here. First his boyfriend, and now
his ghoul. The things that anchor him to the city were, one by
one, being taken away from him.
The message was clear: Get into the ground, Elder, or lose even
       more.
Whoever was behind this was definitely a brute-force thinker.
Shooting first, asking questions later. They can’t be very old,
elder vampires favor subtlety to brute force.
“Thank you for the heads up. You can process the scene,” he
says, “And as usual, I was never here.”
       “Sure thing, boss.”
The Father turns on his heel and leaves the way he came in.
