There’s a moment in Rebus’ day where they find themselves just
finishing up some important task, about to spend some free time.
Maybe they’re just picking up their phone to doom-scroll, or
they’ve just finished up eating and are about to get up and head
to the couch to take a nap.
Whatever it is that they were doing, there’s that one moment of
pause before they start doing the next thing. And whatever it
was they were about to do wasn’t very important.
That’s when there’s a knock at the door.
When Rebus answers the door, at first there’s nobody there. Or
       so it seems.
       Until they look down.
       There’s a crow.
“Hello Rebus,” the crow says. “May I come in?”

They had finished grading papers, and was about to take that nap
that had been building all day. When the knocking came, Brutus
and Gaius lept into action, jumping and barking at the door.
Caesar sauntered slowly after Vieno as they went to answer the
       door.
Nudging the pups aside they peek out. "What in the world," they
mutter as they see the crow. Then it speaks. Now thinking this
is probably someone's familiar, but not one they are familiar
       with.
Curiosity overtook wariness, and they opened the door a little
wider, still pushing the pups away, to let the crow in.
"What is this about?" They ask warily.

The crow hops across the threshold, waddles a little into the
main room of the apartment, and then flaps it’s wings and darts
through the air to land on a bookshelf. From it’s perch there,
it looks around the apartment as if searching for something.
Satisfied with not finding whatever it was looking for, the crow
       looks back down to Rebus.
“Official conciliar business,” it says. “Have you seen this
       man?”
The raven starts to retch, and then hawks up a balled up piece
of paper, which it spits out. It lands on the floor, completely
       dry, but crumpled up.
If Rebus picks it up and unfolds it, it will have a picture of a
man on it. He has tattoos in the High Speech, and is looking
directly at the camera. There’s something sinister about his
       appearance.
“The Council has asked me to recruit a team of Awakened to hunt
       him down.”

The pups backed away from the crow, their bravado gone in the
face of this strange creature. Caesar, however, just watched as
he sat down in a kingly feline manner.
None of these animals were more than they seemed. Rebus loved
       them all anyway.
They furrow their brow when asked if they had seen this person.
After a moment of hesitation, they picked up the paper and
smoothed it out. They frowned, seeing the sinister man with High
Speech glyphs as tattoos on his person. After a long stare, they
looked at the crow. "No, I've never seen him before." They
       confirmed.
After hearing the heart of the crow's mission, they rubbed their
face and looked around. "What did this man do?" They ask,
       stalling.

experimentation on sleepers, tampering with sleepers’ souls
without consent, and consorting with Gulmoths. His crimes
against the sleepers’ laws are extensive but irrelevant,” the
       crow says.
“He just arrived last night in Boston before vanishing into thin
air,” the crow continues to explain. “The Council believes this
is a good opportunity for the next generation of up-and-comers
to prove themselves valuable, contributing members of the
       concilium.”
       Pause.
       “Also there’s a reward.”

They frowned- this was a heavy load of serious offenses. Vieno
had to consider whether they could do it- they wouldn't have to
work alone. That would be the advantage. Maybe someone from the
       Arrow could come along.
This fugitive had a head start. That would be a problem. He
might be stronger than Vieno or any other 'up and comoers'...
but if the Councilors thought it would be too much, surely they
wouldn't be recruiting just anyone to do it?
"Who has been recruited so far?" A pause. "What sort of reward?"
Something like that can't just go unnoticed and asked about.

“You are the first,” the crow says. “I am currently in talks
with several others as we speak.”
The crow smiles. Which crows should not be able to do, because
it is strange and unnatural for a beak to do that.
“Should you and your allies prove successful, I have been
authorized to grant you access to the Vault.”
The Vault was well known to Boston mages. The old blood, old
money that ran the Concilium had run the Concilium for
centuries. Part of how that political power structure remained
in place was controlling the sole access point to the Vault.
       What was in the Vault?
Artifacts. Entities. Magic items, tomes of incredible mystic
power. Anything that was deemed unsafe for public consumption.
Which meant that the Vault wasn’t just a source of a lot of
magical knowledge and secrets -- it was the source of the Good
Stuff. Access to that would go a long way toward empowering a
mage to accomplish any goals they might have.

Vieno looks away from the crow's strange smile, and manages a
slight, uncomfortable smile of their own. Vieno's gaze was
brought back right away at mention of the Vault.
They might have questions about the mission, and who they would
be working with... but there was no question about doing this
       mission.
"Alright, I'm in. How should I contact the others who assumedly
are coming too?" A pause. "Do you need my number?" They looked
about and fetched a pen and paper off a side table, just in
       case.

probably expedite that process, so please do.”
The crow hops down and eats the piece of paper Rebus writes
       their number down on.
       “Be in touch!”
The crow lands in front of the door, and looks over it’s
shoulder at Rebus, clearly expecting to be let out.

They nod and quickly scribble down the number, balling the paper
up then handing it to the crow. "I'll keep an eye out," they
say. After the crow hopped to the door, Rebus jumps slightly,
then goes to open up the door for the crow. "Here you go. Have a
safe and fruitful journey," they tell the bird. When it is gone
they close the door and lean back against it.
This was going to be an interesting few days. They would need to
request emergency time off to avoid complications... time to
kill off a relative. Caesar comes over and sits in Rebus' lap,
       now demanding pets and scritches.
