Oh my god I know why dogs wag their tail so hard they knock
things over, now.
She just about called me a good boy, there. Praising my kill.
And it fills me with pride. I did a good! I did a hunt. I hunted
a good.
Well, I mean I hunted a bad. Which was good. The hunting was
good. Not the bad.
I’m so excited I can’t even think in ways that make sense.
“I think having a pack would be amazing,” I say affirmatively.
“But what do you get out of it? I’d be getting a room, all this
learning… that doesn’t seem fair to you.”

I nod along as she explains what she gets out of the deal, and
honestly it sounds like I’m robbing her blind. I’m going to hunt
anyways, might as well do it here.
“Shifting isn’t supposed to hurt?” I blink. “Out of… balance?
With myself? What’s a hisil?”

people are just as dangerous to the spirit world as the spirits
are to our world?”
…my steak is going to get cold if I don’t eat it faster. I shove
my face full and let her answer my questions.

She opened her mouth to answer the question and then paused
smiling brightly when Max answered her own question. "Exactly!
we need to divide the time we spend in the physical world, the
time we spend in the spirit world. time we spend as a wolf, time
we spend as a human. We are as much spirit as we are person, as
much a wolf as we are humans. it is about embracing all aspects
of yourself."

I finish the steak and stop to take a breath. I push my plate
away about three inches away, signifying I’m done.
“Thank you so much,” I say, practically panting.
Hooray! I got it right!
“That all makes sense,” I say, proud of myself for figuring all
that out just because she said the word ‘balance.’
“Okay so I just need to spend time in the sp-- in the hisil, and
my clothes will stop getting ripped to shreds? But I can’t spend
too much time there, because I also need to spend time on
Earth.”
I pause.
“Do you have a shower I can use?”
I would love to not have to smell myself like this if I don’t
have to.

She smiled. "right."
When she asked about a shower Miri chuckled and nodded. pushing
her own plate aside for the moment. "Come with me. I will get
you some comfy PJ's to change into and show you were the
bathroom and the spare bedroom are."

“Thanks,” I say as she welcomes me, shows me my room, and hands
me the PJ’s. I take it she doesn’t want me walking around naked.
Which is totally fair, I’m not sure I want to be walking around
naked.
I hit the shower as soon as is physically possible. I spend a
long time in there, too, scrubbing and re-scrubbing and
re-re-scrubbing. I am fucking filthy. I’ve been sleeping in the
park, killing policemen, fucking Witches, running around and
being physical, and the whole thing just spells g-r-i-m-e-y.
It’s a wonder Miri put up with me being so grossly unwashed,
given her nose is a werewolf’s nose.
Also the hot water is just relaxing.
I even shift up to Dalu, and scrub that form down, too. There’s
just enough room in the shower for it. Getting in and out of the
bathroom will require Hishu, but that’s a problem for future me.
…okay future me is now present me. I shift down to Hishu and
towel myself off. I throw on my jammiepants and walk back out
into the house, completely not realizing that I’ve changed into
a boy. One person walked into Miri’s shower, and another person
walked out.

Leaving Max to shower and get some sleep it she wanted she had
gone back to the kitchen to finish her own dinner and clean up
the dishes. That done she had settled in the living room with a
book and a nice cup of hot chai. It was the sound of soft
footfalls that caught her attention and she looked up, and
nearly dropped her book.
There was a strange man in her house! It took her a couple of
seconds to realize that the scent of the person ( other then now
being nice and clean0 had not changed.
"Max?" She blinked a couple of times slowly. "Um.." She tilted
her head tot he side. "Are you more comfortable in this form
then the other one?" She had met Uratha that could change their
gender before. She couldn't do it, at least not yet.

I look down at myself and OH JESUS I AM SO GLAD I PUT ON PANTS.
I’m so used to having tits that I cover up my nipples
reflexively.
“I, uh.”
Pause.
“Whoops.” I swallow. I was so not ready to have this
conversation with anyone yet.
“I don’t know. It changes from day to day? I was born like
this,” I motion down to myself. “Always wanted to be a girl
sometimes.”
Another pause, and I muster up the gumption to ask the important
question:
“Is… is that because I’m a werewolf? Can we all choose?”

She smiled actually a little amused by Max's reaction to seeing
that they were in a man-shape. "I am not bothered by it. You not
wearing a shirt i mean. "So you were born male? Interesting i
would never have guessed actually. "She closed her book and set
it aside. scooting over on the plush cough to make room for them
if they wanted to sit down.
"Not all of us can choose no. I can't take a boy form for
example I haven't learn how yet. it is a gift that spirits teach
us. Maybe Boston blessed you with it when you met Her?"
