“That sounds absolutely amazing,” I say. “Thank you.”
I help myself to a beer because I’ve never been allowed to drink
before. I close the fridge and twist-off the top, take a swig
and nod along as she explains the Pure.
“Oh, these things?” I motion to where I know they are when I’m
in the spirit world. They’re like an invisible tattoo, right?
“Got them from some girl named Boston,” I say. “Weird name for a
girl, especially one who lives in Boston, but whatevs. She said
she was some kind of spirit. Told me I could use my werewolf
powers to police the spirit world and the human world, to keep
the balance and protect folks from getting hurt, so that’s what
I’ve been doing. She said that I would become a Bone Shadow,
whatever that means.”
I don’t actually know that I’ve met the spirit of the city. Or
how big a deal it is. I don’t even know what the spirit of the
city is.
“Well. You know. Hurting the ones that get out of line, anyways.
No idea how to prevent things from going sideways, so I just
punish the ones that I find out are overstepping.”

She chuckled. "Invisible tattoos is one way of putting it. They
are marks that other Uratha and spirits, and people who can see
spirit things can see and will tell them that you are part of
the Tribes of the Moon, which is another names for the Uratha.
Uratha is a First Tongue word that means werewolf."
She would have said more but it dawned on her what Max had said.
that she had gotten the marks from [B] Boston [/B] The Boston
with all capital letters. She was so surprised she dropped the
package of mushrooms spilling them into the sink, across the
counter, a few even landing on the floor as she just stared at
Max for a few minutes.
"oh" Yep very articulate. "Boston is not just A spirit she is
THE spirit of the city itself. the most powerful spirit in the
area in the city itself at least." She blinked and then slowly
started cleaning up the mess she had made. "I have never talked
to her myself. It is amazing that she helped you like that. "
"Bone Shadows. The Hirfathra Hissu They are one of the more
mystic tribes. The children of Death wolf. they have a way with
spirits and secret magics. I am a Storm Lord. an Iminir a Child
of Winter Wolf."
"What Boston said it true, and is the purpose of the Uratha to
spolice the spirits keep them in line when and where we can.
Uratha have a lot of enemies though."

I immediately step up and help pick up the mess the mushrooms
make everywhere. Geez.
“Oh is that like… a big deal?” I ask, genuinely. “Should I keep
that to myself, too? IS there some way I can say thank you to
her?”
I nod along as she explains the tribes and who they’re children
of.
“Death Wolf sounds kinda metal,” I say, making a hell yeah face
as we finish cleaning up.
“So there’s Hunters and the Pure. I’ve figured out that there
are spirits who don’t like us much, either -- I guess that comes
with being the hall monitor, huh?”

"Thanks." She gave a bit of an awkward smile as Max helped her
clean up the mess throwing away the mushrooms that had fallen on
the floor. Once that was done she started slicing the remaining
ones.
"A VERY big deal. Powerful spirits usually don't help people for
free they expect something in return. if it were me i would keep
it to himself unless i really needed to impress someone and then
telling them i was friends with Boston. Though that might be a
bit of an exaggeration." She thought about the way to thank the
spirit. "Let me think on that one for a bit and i will see if i
can come up with an idea."
"Right, Hunters, Pure, the spirits, Hosts. The reason the
spirits don't like us is in part because we police them, it is
also because we killed Father Wolf. Werewolf history stretches
back into the mystical time period. Back to when all the
continents were one and there was no separation between the
spirits world and the mortal one."

“Oh,” I say as she explains that it’s a big deal. “Wonder what
Boston is going to get out of helping me.”
I listen as she explains about killing Father Wolf.
“We did? Does that happen during your first change or
something?” I ask, not really following what she’s getting at.
“I don’t remember killing anyone, so I guess it’s possible.”
I mean. Father Wolf is apparently dead. Apparently we did it. I
don’t remember killing him, and there’s only one time in my life
I don’t remember…
I finish my beer and sit at the table.

"No I mean way way way back during the mythic age the
werewolves, some of them, killed Father Wolf who was the most
powerful spirit. But some of his children thought he was growing
weak, and wasn't able to hunt and police the spirits like he
used to so they killed him." She sighed. "it is really hard to
explain I wish i was better at this. I am sorry."
She slipped the steaks, and added mushrooms and onions.
She decided to change topics. "I don't know what Boston wants
from you, but if she helped you she obviously say some great
potential in you."

“Please don’t apologize. I’m learning so much! You’re doing
amazing as far as I can tell.”
Which, admittedly, isn’t the best perspective to be judging
anything from. But still.
She changes the subject, though, and I follow along. I’m just
grateful for whatever she wants to share.
“You think?” I say. Someone saw potential in me? And more
importantly, the god of Boston saw potential in me?
“...I mean, what would someone like Boston value in a werewolf?
If she really helped me out as much as you’re saying she did,
then I definitely don’t want to let her down.”

She smiled at Max when the other girl said she was doing great.
"I never thought i would be in a position where i had to teach
someone about being a werewolf. I don't mind though. Helping
you." She moved and puled down plates and silverware plating
the food and setting the huge steak done rare in front of Max
before sitting down across from her.
"There is no telling really. Spirits are mysterious and have
their own reasons and goals. She said you were a Bone Shadow so
she probably wants you to learn as many mystical secrets as you
can. You are also a Rahu which means you are a born warrior,
so... actually there might be a specific spirit or group of
spirits she wants you to start hunting. That would make sense to
me."

I dig into that steak like it’s the first home-cooked meal I’ve
eaten in a month… because it is the first home-cooked meal I’ve
eaten in a month.
I take a good minute or so stuffing my face and groaning in
pleasure. I don’t remember meat tasting so…
…so…
…meaty!
“God you’re a good cook,” I say after I swallow, tilting my head
for emphasis.
“I think you’re right. ’ve been hunting,” I say between bites,
nodding. “Just today I found a serial killer. Turned out to be a
cop that was possessed. It just came naturally to me, like
riding a bike after a long rest.”

She laughed softly. "Thank you. It is just steak it is not that
hard. I am glad you like it." She ate hers a little slower.
"You found a possessed cop that was a serial killer? Wow. good
job that's impressive." She smiled. "I have been focusing on the
area around this neighborhood since i have claimed it as my
territory. Other then a pesky spirit i haven't had too much to
hunt."
She looked at Max for a long moment clearly considering
something. "So i have a question. How would you feel about
becoming pack? I can keep teaching you what I need to know, and
we can go hunting together. Plus since you are assumed dead, and
I am guessing living on the streets, i have an extra room, you
can stay here."
