August 21, 2020 marks the 80th anniversary of the assassination
of Leon Trotsky at the hands of a Stalin agent, when the Russian
revolutionary was in exile in Mexico. It tragically ended an
intense life, which perhaps had followed the pulse of the
revolutions of the 20th century like no other. Clandestine
militant under tsarism, brilliant journalist, prophet of the
revolutions in Russia, deported to Siberia, exiled from country
to country, president of the Petrograd Soviet, ally of Lenin and
strategist of October 1917, organizer of the Red Army, opponent
of the course who takes the Soviet process under Stalin's
dictatorship, again deported, again exiled, finally
assassinated. Trotsky seems to embody in modern times the
classical figure of the tragic hero.

       Ukrainian village, the
fifth child in a family of middle-class Jewish farmers. Educated
in cosmopolitan Odessa, he soon dropped out of college to devote
himself to revolutionary journalism and politics. Imprisoned in
various Russian cities, deported to Siberia, he made a
pilgrimage to Vienna, London, Zurich and Munich, where he
participated in the debates between the factions of Russian
Social Democracy, the Bolsheviks and the Mensheviks. He returned
to Saint Petersburg, later renamed Petrograd, in early 1905 to
become the main leader of the city's Soviet as the first Russian
       revolution broke out.

Once again arrested and exiled to Siberia, He then wrote the
famous thesis on the "permanent revolution" according to which
in a world system dominated by capitalism, the bourgeois
revolutions of backward countries would overlap with socialist
revolutions. He returned to pilgrimage through cities of Russian
exile such as London, Berlin, Vienna, Paris, Barcelona and New
York, to hastily return to Russia after the outbreak of the
February Revolution of 1917, where he would be called to play a
       leading role.
