Adjustments

When I do an "adjustment" in PS, I usually need to flatten the
image before I can do any other action.
This is a recent problem, which hadn't occurred before.
Also, what's the difference between "flatten" and "merge"?

Hi Helen, have you ever worked with adjustment layers? They
allow you to make adjustments to the image without any
flattening.
If by "adjustments" you are referring to things like cloning,
etc., then you don't need to flatten the image - you just need
to click on the background layer and make the adjustments.
"Merge" allows you to merge only the selected layers, "flatten"
merges all layers regardless of which ones you select.

I mean using adjustment layers, which I've done for years with
no problem.
But in the past couple of weeks, I cannot follow up with other
actions without flattening the layers. (I've never tried to
merge just a few; I flatten all.)
Could I have inadvertently changed some setting which would
cause this problem?

I've never had this problem, nor have I ever heard of it.
Without seeing your workflow, I can't even begin to figure out
what might be wrong. I guess it is possible that you
accidentally switched something on or off, but what that might
be, I don't have a clue. Maybe if you can grab a screenshot that
illustrates the problem?
