       Course Feedback

Hi everyone, as we are nearing the end of the course (I'm
keeping the class open until the end of the month, since I was
busy with workshops last week), I'm interested in getting some
feedback so I can improve the course in the future. I'm
interested to know from you what you think works and doesn't
work, and what you'd like to see more of. Please feel free to be
as hard with your critiques as I have been with your photos! ;D
If you enjoyed the course and would like to leave a testimonial
on my website, you may do so in the comment section here:

I'm trying to figure out a way to make the course discussions
available to everyone after the course is officially closed. For
now, I will just keep the forum open for awhile - you may refer
to the course discussions and critiques at any time, but at the
end of the month I will cease to monitor the discussion boards
       or answer any questions.
Also, I am considering adding a monthly subscription option (for
a modest fee) that would allow course participants to continue
with class discussion and critique for as long as they want. I'm
hoping to have something set up by the beginning of next year.
If you are interested, let me know - I can send you details when
       they become available.
I'm not going to say goodbye yet - we still have a week left -
but I know already that I am going to miss you guys! This has
been a lot of fun for me, and I hope it has been a good
       experience for you as well.
       Thanks so much!

Ian, this course has given me explanations of why many of my
photographs, especially the big landscapes, just didn't have the
impact and feel I had when I took the photos. Way too many were
close but just not it and I couldn't put my finger on it. I
found the critique galleries very informative. Reading about
composition and technique in references such as visual flow and
trying to apply it is one thing, but getting your opinion on my
photos and the rest of the classes was very helpful to me.
Commentary on what was working or not working in those images
was more real world than just reading about it. You'd think
someone that started shooting with an F2 would have gotten it by
now. There is always hope. I would be very interested in an
       ongoing discussion and critique program.
       Thanks for all the info.

Hey Ian, no matter what level one is at as a photographer a
course such as what you have offered is always useful and
refreshing. There is always something new to learn, perspectives
to share and contemplate and of course meeting new people and
seeing what they are capturing as images. I thank you again for
doing this and sharing your time and expertise.
Yes, I would be interested in the monthly subscription option
       when it might be available...

Ian, I enjoyed the course. I learned a lot.
       - I learned from seeing different kinds and styles of work from
       my fellow students. Y'all rock!
       - The critiques were very helpful. You reviewed about 250
images, so you covered quite a few key ideas and covered some of
them multiple times. That was very helpful.
       - The examples you posted to reinforce your points were very
       useful.
       - The six topics were great building blocks.
Following are some ideas. These aren't criticisms; I'm just
       thinking out loud.
       - I'd like to see more depth in at least some of the critiques.
I appreciate that you were constructively positive and I know
you need to hit the key points. It would have been useful to
see you take a few images (say 5? 2 per week?) and go much
further so we could see your complete thought process, possibly
including processing a couple if people were agreeable.
       - Personally, I still have a hard time assessing overall
quality. I'd like to know where the images really stand. I
appreciate it when you say it's good but I'd like to know
whether it's a good image but a 3- star image nonetheless or a
good image that is actually a 4-star image. Since objectively I
don't think I have any 5-star images I'd love to know if you
thought differently but only if it was really true.
       - How about a similar format devoted to processing? 4 to 6 weeks
that went into some depth about key elements. Students could
post a raw image with an adjustment and you could comment. Just
       a thought.
       - I think it would be useful to submit different treatments of
the same scene (landscape vs. portrait, with and without a crop,
etc.) to let you comment on why you preferred one treatment vs.
another. What I might try to do is shoot a scene very wide to
show all the possibilities and then shoot it the way I wanted to
portray it. Then you would have a reference point to say that
it should be wider, tighter, left, right, brighter, darker, etc.
       - We talked about student interaction. One possibility: assign
each participant to review one other student each week and
rotate the assignments. I think we might all be a little
hesitant but the requirement to be thoughtful and constructive
would probably help us teach ourselves.
Just a bunch of ideas, really. When it's all said and done I
thought the course was fun, highly informative, and great value
for the money. I would recommend it and I would take it again
in exactly the same format if you didn't change a thing.
Final thought: it was very helpful for me to go through the
lessons and then reinforce them during your field workshop
(fellow classmates, I've taken three of Ian's workshops. Highly
recommended if you have the chance). It dawns on me that you
could tie an online class to your field workshops, either before
or after, as an opportunity for students to extend and
consolidate the learning process. Perhaps a three or four week
online course ahead of time to work on composition and a two
week course after to work on processing?

Hi Gary, these are great ideas, you've given me a lot to think
about - thanks so much for the feedback!
