Wrestling Magazines Article w/rundown and explanation of what is
going on and what is happening with the new look NWA!
- STAFF [November 1993]
Turnbuckle News is just as shocked, excited, and curious as you
pro wrestling fans out there in regards to the news and rumors
that are surrounding the National Wrestling Alliance in the wake
of the split with World Championship Wrestling. Ted Turner and
his WCW outfit had been working in tandem with the NWA ever
since the media mogul bought Jim Crockett Promotions in 1988.
As we all know, the Crockett Foundation was formed all the way
back in 1931 as a means to assist US Military veterans in need.
The philanthropy has grown over the years and so, apparently,
has the use of the Crockett Foundation. We have learned that
when Jim Crockett Jr sold JCP to Turner the sale was only for
the NWA territory rights of JCP, contracted talent, and the
television slots already on Turner networks (he bought out the
existing contracts with JCP to convert to the new WCW
promotion). While the NWA continued in partnership with the new
WCW promotion in order to keep its name, belts, and interests in
the public's (and media) eyes, the ownership of the NWA
likenesses, physical properties, images, trademarks, and all
business contracts and agreements of JCP reverted to Jim
Crockett Jr. By default Jim became the "owner" of the NWA due
to JCP constituting a majority of existing NWA contracts,
interests, and the agreements for the NWA images, trademarks,
and belts. Jim Jr was the president of the organization at the
time of the sale and presided over an NWA executive counsel
meeting in which all interested parties were able to voice
concerns and vote on any matters deemed necessary. The result
of this meeting was what we are now seeing come to fruition with
the new NWA ownership consortium.
Yes, pro wrestling fans there are new owners in town.
Officially Jerry Lawler, Jim Cornette, Jerry Jarrett, Todd
Gordon, Max Andrews, and Jim Crockett Jr are your NWA Ownership
Consortium. At this point we can only speculate but what we're
hearing is that the NWA will host a "national promotion" via the
ESPN deal that Max Andrews and GWF have. The promotions owned
and promoted by each individual in the consortium are now the
major regional territories of the new look NWA. While a
national television broadcast isn't quite set in stone
(finalization and agreement with ESPN hasn't quite been closed)
each new member organization has an excellent regional broadcast
deal that can easily be pooled and made "national" with
syndication and centralization of programming efforts. From the
looks of things though ESPN is on board due to the increasing
popularity of pro wrestling after a somewhat down turn from the
1980's "boom" period. Helping sell ESPN on the idea is the sale
to Turner itself as it points to just how hot of a property pro
wrestling is right now. Many behind the scenes are speculating
whether there is enough name recognition and star power with
this new NWA entity. We here at Turnbuckle News aren't seeing
an issue with that as names such as Von Erich, Snuka, Martel,
The Freebirds, and Windham are already being printed on
informational sheets we're getting. Of note are some attendance
numbers you may not be aware of. The USWA is drawing anywhere
from 1800 to 5500 per event, SMW is drawing 500 to 2000, ECW is
drawing 500 to 1200, and the GWF is drawing 600 to 2000. Live
shows are doing relatively well. Right now we can't go into any
further detail. News is coming in every day and we'll pass
along more as we know it. In the meantime you can be on the
look out for the new NWA Magazine hitting news stands next
month!
NWA Worldwide - Official Magazine of the National Wrestling

The world of professional wrestling is changing rapidly. Fans
across the world have seen monumental changes in just the last 5
years alone. Many individuals feel that they know better than
you, the fans, when it comes to what you want from a
professional wrestling promotion. The National Wrestling
Alliance has never felt that way.

SHOWCASE IMAGE HERE
NWA Wrestling Showcase [InDemand PPV - ] JANUARY 30, 1994
Nashville Municipal Auditorium - 5,121 att
Rick Rude Promo w/World Title Belt stating that he had to finish
some business and clear up some red tape but he is THE WORLD
CHAMPION of professional wrestling and there'd better not be any
question about it. If the NWA wants to pull the same trash that
WCW tried to pull he's got some representation they can talk
too. I'm here, I've got the belt RIGHTFULLY and I'm the true
world champion. That's right, Rick Rude is back in the NWA and
it's the same song second verse, going to be a lot more rowdy
and a whole lot worse. See you in February and if anyone thinks
they've got what it takes they're more than welcome to come to
Wrestle War and find out they don't.
Brunzell/Blair VS Black Bart/John Hawk (USA Tag Title Tournament
RD 1)
Roma backstage with Solie yapping about his NWA World Tag Title
situation and demanding the NWA kick Arn to the curb ... Arn
walks up and tells the "glorified gym rat" he doesn't do
business correctly and that 'ol Arn had been talking with the
NWA and getting things straight, legally before doing something
rash ... STEVE AUSTIN walks up grinning and just listens. Arn
goes for the "I can bet your bottom dollar Austin ain't a fan of
ya Roma" ... Austin "ya got that right Arn ... and I don't like
you neither ... you two kinda owe me a rematch seeing as how I
had a worthless partner subbed in for me to defend these titles
with. So you two figure this out and me and Bobby here will be
waiting to 'how's it go Arn' Beat the tar outta ya"
John Tatum/Rod Price VS Action Jackson/Iceman Parsons (USA Tag
Title Tournament RD 1)
NWA World TV Title Match - Lord Steven Regal (c) accompanied by
Jean Paul VS Sabu (ECW TV champion)
Regal dodges match mostly, doesn't want to engage with
"barbaric" Sabu and "non-gentelmanly" manner of actions.
Eventually Sabu goes to top rope and JP trips him up so Regal a
can plant DDT and escape.
Barry Windham VS Bad News Allen
Windham takes a few punches but emphatically takes home a win
showing off why he's a former world champion and deserves to be
in the conversation now.
Video recap of Good 'ol Boys kind of getting together and taking
shots at Rhodes etc
NWA United States Championship Title Match - Dustin Rhodes (c)
VS 'Honky Tonk' Wayne Ferris [Ferris wins by DQ when Rhodes
catches guitar and then uses it]
El Hijo del Santo/Octagon (AAA Tag C) VS The Orient Express
Mexican duo wins a highly entertaining match that saw the fans
give an ovation to both teams.
Jerry Lawler (USWA Heavyweight C) VS Chris Adams (GWF
Heavyweight C)
UPSET! Huge huge win for Chris Adams as the GWF champion takes
down the USWA title holder and legend of the ring.
