House of Lycus - Courtyard
-=Is somewhere in the open courtyard of the compound.=-
ALL: I stood, outside, in the Courtyard, of the House of Lycus,
felt the summer breeze on my bare skin, the heat of Tor tu Gor
on my flesh. I had long since become accustomed to being kept
****, as all slaves were, as was quite normal in a Slaver's
House, any lingering fragments of modesty or embarrassment long
since gone. I was a slave. Gorean Men would look on me as they
pleased, though only one Man could touch me, my Owner, He whose
collar was locked about my throat, Marcus Lycus.

-=Is somewhere in the open courtyard of the compound.=-
ALL: Off to one side I could see the bond maid circle, the one
that I had entered, of my own accord, the night that I had lost
a wager with my Master, the night that he had claimed me as
property. I had stepped into that circle a Free Woman, a Lady
Merchant, one with notions of acquiring not only wealth but also
power, one who had once thought that she might rule a City. Not
openly of course, for there were few places on Gor where a Woman
might sit on a Throne, wield power in her own right. Tharna for
one, others perhaps. But no, my intent had been more subtle, to
be the power behind the Throne, the voice that whispered in
another's ear, a Man's ear.
Cardonicus had been where my plans had been supposed to come to
fruition - or, perhaps more accurately, the plans of she who I
had, at the time called Mother, the Matriarch of House ze Omun,
for it had been She who had instructed me to go to Cardonicus,
to establish a presence there, to represent the House ze Omun,
to get close to the Administrator.
Perhaps that plan might have succeeded, in which case my life
now would have bene very different to what it was. But there had
been....complications, ones of my own making, ones that had seen
carefully laid plans crumble to dust, had seen Ydril ze Omun
banished from Cardonicus, an act that had incurred the
displeasure of She who I had then called Mother, as time and
effort - and coin - invested in plans that had taken months to
see to conclusion proved to be wasted, an errant Daughter
summoned back to House ze Omun on Asperiche to explain to Mother
what had caused plans to fail.

ALL: Only I had not gone to Asperiche, preferring not to have
that conversation with She who I had then called Mother, for I
had been well aware of how it would have ended, the choices that
I would have been given. Instead I had thought to lose myself on
Gor, but it was a dangerous thing for a Woman to wander this
World alone b and in seeking the sanctuary of the House of Lycus
I had ended up with that which I had sought to avoid by not
returning to Asperiche, the collar, the brand.
For I had gambled. And lost.
Perhaps my wager with Marcus Lycus, that which had seen me step
into the bond maid circle as the Lady Merchant Ydril ze Omun and
emerge as a nameless slave soon to be Yana and then Sundrop had
simply been the last wager of many, and the one where my luck
had finally ran out. After all, how many times had I gambled and
won before then, how many times had fate and good fortune looked
admirable upon me?
The day on far away Tyros, on the wharves of Kasra, where a
blonde haired she urt had been captured, one whose ribs showed
through her flesh such was her hunger, one unable to read or
write? On any other day I might have been handed straight to a
Slaver for a handful of copper, but on that particular day the
Matriarch of House ze Omun had been about the docks in search of
waifs such as the blonde haired she urt.
And so I had taken one path, when I might have taken another, a
path that had finally led to a vart invested cave in Tyros. Two
she urts had entered that cave, one with a red sash about her
hips, one with a yellow, each with a hook knife held in hand.
The girl with the red sash's hand had trembled as she clutched
the hilt of the blade but when the time had come she had done
what she had to do, for two entered but only one emerged, the
yellow sashed girl left to the varts a the one in thr red sash's
staggered out, her belly sliced from tit to hip, one hand
keeping her innards within.

ALL: The scar was gone now, seen to by the Lady Physician of
Freeport. I was unsure as to how I felt about that in truth.
Undoubtedly the scar had been a blemish, and more than that it
had served to identify me, at a time when it was perhaps best if
I was not easily identified. But nonetheless, the scar was part
of who I had been.
But then was that not the point? Who I had been. The scar
belonged to the she urt, not a slave named Sundrop.
That se hurt had become the Lady Ydril ze Omun, Daughter of
House ze Omun. Like Yana and Sundrop a name I had been given,
one chosen by another, not the name I had been given at birth.
Another door that I had stepped through, another path taken,
another instance where fate had favoured me.
I had spent long months on Asperiche recovering from my wound.
But there had been other things to do there too. I had been
taught different things. How to read. How to write. How to speak
the barbarian tongue called English. I had learned how to be a
Merchant, and how to be a Lady, which fork and knife to use for
which course at a banquet, had read the work of the poets of Ar,
the playwrights of Cos. And I had began to experience power.
Just a hint, a taste of it, the way that She who had been my
Mother would wield her influence, sometimes with a carefully
chosen word, other times with no word at all, but silence. For
it was on Asperiche that I had learned that silence could be a
weapon, one of the few on Gor that might be wielded equally
deftly by Women as Men.
Also on Asperiche I had learned that while some doors might have
opened, others might remain resolutely closed, quite literally,
for there had been places in the House of ze Omun that had been
forbidden to me, even though I now held name of ze Omun, so
places in my own House that I could not go, doors that were
locked, barred.
I had been told once that it was better not to know what lay
beyond those doors.

ALL: Finally She who had been my Mother had judged that I had
learned all that I could, that I was ready to take my leave from
Asperiche, to take my place in the Games that House ze Omun
played. And so I found myself in Cardonicus, and again I
gambled. Perhaps it was in Cardonicus that my luck finally
changed, that I wagered and lost, for instead of lacing my
tongue in honey to whisper in the Administrator's ear it
unwittingly oozed venom. Once again perhaps I was lucky, at
least to a point, for on one occasion I thought that perhaps I
had gone too far, might find myself in steel, instead was simply
banished, this then being that brought the plans of House ze
Omun crashing down around me, the blame directed towards me,
perhaps not unfairly. And so I left Cardonicus, fled the reach
of She who had been my Mother on Asperiche, in doing so fell
through one door after another until I found myself
Here.
In the House of Lycus.

House of Lycus - Courtyard
-=Is somewhere in the open courtyard of the compound.=-
ALL: I stood, arms folded under bare ****, felt the summer air
on my flesh. The Courtyard was quiet at this ahn, though the
House would likely soon be stirring. Was it here, I wondered,
that my luck had run out, finally? Or was it here that fate had
smaller opened the door that I had always been destined to step
through? Had every other event been but a stepping stone on my
way here? Had each name that I had had simply been a
placeholder?
When I thought that I had lost the wager had I in fact won?

ALL: It was strange. I had not thought about much of this for
some time - months. Perhaps it was the conversation I had had
with my Master the other day, where he had mentioned that the
bounty that she who had been my Mother had placed on she who had
been her Daughter had been rescinded. Ydril was no longer hunted
by House ze Omun.
But something about this did not sit well with me. Perhaps time
would tell. But for now I had duties to see to, for I was a
slave. And so I tool one more look at the bond maid circle where
my life had changed forever, irrevocably, and then I turned,
made my way back into the House, where I would see to it that
all was in order.
