ALL: Yana was in the Great Hall of the House of Lycus. Not
training, as she had been on previous days, not standing or
kneeling in front of mirrors practicing different slave
positions, how to move with a lithe sensuality, how to carry
herself in a way that would make men want her, desire her, seek
to throw her to the furs, pull her ankles apart and take her.
No, this day the blonde was on hands and knees, hard at work
with scrubbing brush and pail, washing the marble tiles that
formed much of the floor of the Hall. She who had once been
Ydril ze Omun, had held title of Daughter of House ze Omun, had
enjoyed life of luxury, opulence, extravagance, had had slaves
to bathe her, dress her, clean for her, now found herself naked,
on her hands and knees, steel around her throat, a brand burned
into her thigh, scrubbing a floor, and knowing that if it was
not done to the satisfaction of Sinnabun, she would feel the
second girl's switch across her bare backside.

ALL: Yana pressed the bristles of the brush into the marble,
scrubbed, hard, hard enough that she could feel the muscles in
her arms gently protesting, hard enough that a thin sheen of
sweat glistened on her bare body as she moved across the floor,
her knees aching from having spent what felt like ahn on hard
marble. It would be fair to say that she worked not with skill,
of, for that matter, enthusiasm, her efforts lacing either
quality, for while Ydril ze Omun might have learned many things
during her life, first as an Orphan, on the wharves of Kasra,
and then, after she had been adopted, became Daughter of House
ze Omun, in her Mother's villa on Asperiche and elsewhere.
The wharves had taught her how to survive, how to be aware of
danger, to elude it, how to steal, and aye, how to fight. The
scar on her belly was testament to that. Distinctive, aye, it a
reminder of another time, another life, one that did not involve
scrubbing floors, one that existed only in memories, though that
had been the case long before she had first set foot in the
House of Lycus, for in a way the she urt that had worn the red
sash had never emerged from the cave in Tyros, for she had
entered an Orphan, staggered out a Daughter, one clutching her
stomach to keep her innards within, the Healers only called
after she had been told that her name was Ydril.

ALL: She worked the brush at a particularly stubborn spot of
marble, muscles flexing as she scrubbed hard, dipping the evils
into soapy water every now and then. Her instructions had been
clear, the floor would be inspected later, was to be found
gleaming or there would be repercussions. And so she laboured,
naked, in the Great Hall of the House of Lycus, surrounded by
the trappings of her Master's status and Caste, the banners of
blue and yellow that adorned the walls, the furnishings,
understated elegance such as she might have favoured in her own
chambers in Cardonicus, the possessions of a man that had no
need to stand and shout to the world of his taste, for that
taste was evident in all that he owned, which, of course,
included the nude blonde that now scrubbed the floor, for just
like the tables, the chairs, the tapestries, she, too, was a
property of the House of Lycus, a thing that was owned.
A slave.

ALL: Aye, the wharves of Kasra formed one part of her story,
that of the orphaned she urt who had grown up on those wharves,
had a name, one that was neither Ydril nor Yana, one that had
never been said aloud after she emerged from the cave, her
opponent left within, a meal for the varts that had flocked
around her. Her Mother had taken that name from her, named her
Ydril, Ydril ze Omun, Daughter of House ze Omun.
But that name, too, had been lost, when she had stepped into the
bond maid circle in the courtyard of the House of Lycus, for in
the eyes of Gorean law a slave has nothing, not even a name
unless her Master chooses to give her one. And so just as the
Orphan had ceased to be, so too did the Daughter.
Orphan.
Daughter.
Slave.
A trinity of sorts. Three parts of the same whole. Each
incomplete without the other. Even the slave with her part to
play.

ALL: Orphan
Daughter
Slave.
The thought resonated within her. A different step here, a
different step there and she would not be as she was. The day
that the Orphan had been caught in Kasra she who would come to
be her Mother had bene on the wharves, had signalled that the
blonde haired waif held by dock workers was to be given to her,
that she might be tested, see if she was fit to wear mantle of
Daughter of House ze Omun. An ahn earlier or a ahn later and she
would not have been there, the she urt then would have suffered
the same fate as others of her ilk that were caught, the collar
most likely, and the iron, then slavery, on her back if she was
lucky, in the fields or mills if she was not.
But the Matriarch of House ze Omun had been present that day.
And so her journey had went on a different path, one that
ultimately led via other places to the House of Lycus. That
path, too, had ample opportunity to misstep. She could have
lingered in Cardonicus. Or accepted one of the offers of
Companionship that she received. Even were she to have still
found her way to the House of Lycus it might have been at a time
when the Master of the House was absent. Or had chosen not to
have a kaissa board in his Hall. Or she could have won the game.
After all, she almost had.
A multitude of different things had to be in alignment for her
to be where she was. The Orphan had to become the Daughter, the
Daughter then the slave. What, the nude blonde wondered as she
scrubbed the floor of the Hall, her thoughts now far beyond its
confines, would be the next step in her journey?
