History: Marcus Civis and his sister Livilla grew up as beggars
in the streets of Rome shortly after the time of Julius Caesar.
After Livilla died (of tuberculosis), Marcus joined the Roman
army, where he was given his last name. He served in Gaul and
in Britannica for many years, and in his 30’s he met and married
his wife Elia – an officer in Boadicea’s army who was a fierce
fighter and a brilliant tactician, and who had a reputation for
being “unkillable”. Marcus by this time was disillusioned with
the corruption of Rome and the officers he served with. When
his term of service was over, he left the Legion to fight for
Boadicea under Elia’s command. It was during this time that he
was killed in battle, and miraculously came back to life as Elia
was grieving over his body.
It soon became obvious that he was changed, and as years went
by, neither he nor Elia aged. They eventually left Britain and
made their way to Egypt, where they met Marcus Constantine.
Marcus was their teacher and he explained what they had both
become; both were Immortals, although nobody knew at what point
Elia had first “died”. They were a passionate and passionately
devoted couple, and after they learned what they had become, it
was always Elia’s belief that the gods had brought Marcus to her
all the way from Rome. Nobody who saw knew them throughout the
centuries ever doubted that they were destined for each other.
They lived together for centuries, mostly keeping to themselves,
fiercely protecting each other and their lives together. They
had no interest in the Game, and they believed in survival more
than in the Rules: if you left them alone, they left you alone;
but come after either of them and you had better make sure sure
you got them alone, or you’d be fighting the both of them.
They owned a large farm in the hills of Kentucky, which suffered
a little less damage than some other places because it was so
remote (the house was still standing) so in recent years, they
did better than some; but Marcus’ peaceful life was destroyed
when, after two thousand years of survival, Elia’s head was
taken. Nobody knows by whom – Marcus came home one day to find
her headless body. She had been shot in the heart and then
beheaded.
Marcus went a little crazy. He went a lot crazy. With no
leads, no way of avenging his wife’s death, he has never found
either closure or revenge. He travels randomly now, seeking out
other Immortals, hoping to find whoever killed Elia – how, he
has no idea.
It is much more likely, he is aware, that he will lose his own
head before he finds his wife’s murderer. Marcus doesn’t much
care. If someone wants to take his head, they’re welcome to try.
But they had better come loaded for bear, because Marcus will
not sell his life cheap. He would welcome death; he believes
that whatever gods brought them together will reunite him with
Elia – but he will not dishonor her memory by being an easy
kill.
Marcus drinks a lot these days. He is foul of temper and surly,
and he’s easy to pick a fight with. But if you leave him alone,
he’ll leave you alone. Unless you’re an Immortal with a .45
who’s been in Kentucky recently……
Played by “Trilby”
