       The Man with the Mustache

Richard Ganes spends most of his career at Herricks within the
creative corner he has established over the past forty one
years. Some of you may be familiar with the jolly exuberant man
with a stylish mustache and small ponytail floating about the
school in casual clothing. But before beginning his career
teaching art Mr. Ganes attended school at Carnegie Melon in
Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. After graduate school he realized the
reality of painting pieces of artwork for the rest of his life
would not make him the good living he wished to have, which led
him to utilize his teaching degree to land a job here at
Herricks. When asked what keeps him coming back to the Herricks
school district time and time again Ganes replied, "They're
wonderful here... everyone is very supportive of the arts and I
appreciate that. It's great working with young people on a daily
basis." As one of Mr.Ganes's students for the past two years I
decided to find out what he sees in us Herricks students that he
can't find anywhere else. Without missing a beat he responded
with a chuckle explaining that he hasn't really been anywhere
else besides Herricks, but throughout the decades he has seen
the ethnicities of our community change. Ganes says that it has
gone from a mostly Irish, Italian, and Jewish community to a
largely Asian community, but the quality of the students remain
strong. He stressed that mostly all of the students he's had and
continue to have the privilege to work with here at Herricks are
sweet, hardworking, nice, and very humble individuals.
His favorite projects that he has given out over his many years
of teaching involve the grand still life he spent 10 hours
setting up in the back of the art room, the "inside outside"
project, and any of the self portrait related projects.
Assigning these assignments and seeing individuals develop their
talent and love for art is the most rewarding part of Mr.
Ganes's job. He loves seeing people learn to get better at art
while growing a passion for it at the same time. Mr. Ganes truly
believes that everyone should have some form of arts related
class in their schedule because it is a wonderful release from
the academic pressures constantly felt throughout the school
       day.
Hopefully the man in the mustache nesting in the creative corner
of Herricks High School will continue to teach students with
patience and kindness how to learn to love and appreciate the
       arts.
