The Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York is the arena where the
new Brooklyn Nets will be playing. The location of the arena is
620 Atlantic Avenue Brooklyn, New York 11217. Plans for the
Barclays Center first broke ground on March 11, 2010, and the
center had its grand opening on September 21, 2012.
The two owners of the Barclays Center include Forest City
Enterprise and ONEXIM Sports and Entertainment. The 1 billion
dollar stadium opened with a performance by Jay Z, one of the
two owners of the Nets. Mikhail Prokhorov, the other owner, was
also there to reveal his revamped team and its arena.
“For me, there is only one place: No. 1,” said Prokhorov, the
6-foot 8-inch Russian billionaire who purchased the team two
years ago. “And I do my best in order to reach championship.”
In addition to the opening of the Barclays Center, the Nets
resigned NBA star Deron Williams, acquired Joe Johnson in a
blockbuster trade, and added Gerald Wallace for support.
The new arena is approximately 675,000 square feet and is
expected to have 220 events per year including, basketball
games, concerts, and family events. The Barclays Center is the
new home for the Nets and is also chic, the exterior being made
of weathered steel and glass plus a grand oculus that protrudes
out over the main plaza, framing the sky.
Inside, the stadium has a herringbone-patterned court, the only
one of NBA stadiums. In addition, they have an all black lane, a
new feature of their court. Moreover, the arena also includes a
high definition scoreboard that is visible from the main doors,
not far from the Long Island Railroad.
Furthermore, there are a multitude of restaurants surrounding
the center, all of which are Brooklyn establishments, including
Fatty 'Cue barbeque, Nathan’s Famous Hot Dogs, and Brooklyn
Cupcakes. Additionally, on the second level of the stadium
there’s an outpost of Jay-Z’s 40/40 club.
All in all, the Barclays Center is a piece of art, integrating
technological advancements with sports. It is a star studded
stadium that might become one of the greatest stadiums. Who
knows, maybe the Nets could go out and win it all this year!
