“Humans of New York” meets Herricks

Most people don’t know Brandon Stanton by name, but over 300,000
people across various social media outlets follow this man’s
posts almost religiously. Stanton, a 28 year old unemployed bond
trader, runs the popular blog “Humans of New York,” also known
as HONY. As opposed to other popular blogs of the decade, HONY
doesn’t feature fashion, music, or even celebrities. Instead,
HONY shines a light on average people; literally, people who are
just walking down the street. In fact, a few students from
Herricks recently made it on to the blog after Stanton
photographed a large gathering of Muslims celebrating the end of
       Ramadan in Jamaica, Queens.
Although people from all walks of life have graced the pages of
HONY, Stanton has a soft spot for children and NYC’s most
eccentric inhabitants. Whether it’s a fashion designer who used
Barbies as hair accessories or an adorable elderly couple, HONY
celebrates each story to its fullest. Stanton is truly a
dedicated artist. For two years now, he has roamed the streets
of New York in rain or shine. Stanton will lie in the middle of
traffic or get down on all fours just to get the perfect shot.
It’s hard to fathom this idea when we consider that Stanton does
this pro-bono. A few months ago, Stanton decided to sell prints
of some of his most popular shots. The decision to make prints
was not so much to earn a profit, but to satisfy the
overwhelming demand by fans. Within hours of making the
announcement, multiple HONY websites crashed from the influx of
       excited buyers.
In the summer of 2010, Stanton set out to create a “photographic
census of New York City.” But his project has developed into
much more than just a census. His photos capture the beauty of
humans; a much needed contrast from the constant suffering and
bad news most media is filled with. As Stanton stops random New
Yorkers on the streets to photograph them, he takes the time to
learn more about each individual. Whether it’s the person’s life
story or a clever quote, he relays all the information he
receives back to his eager followers in the form of photo
captions. These captions never fail to spark arguments or
hundreds of theories concerning the subject of the photo and
       their life.
HONY’s ability to give a unique voice and face to some of the
eight million New Yorkers has inspired the world. Stanton’s
success has moved international fans to create their own blogs
featuring interesting citizens of their respective cities. To
date, there are Humans of Rome, Humans of Paris, Humans of
India, Humans of Toronto, Humans of Syracuse, Humans of Tel
Aviv, Humans of Copenhagen, Humans of Beirut and many more in
the works. Stanton has even inspired me to create Humans of
Herricks. Appearing in a HONY portrait and meeting Stanton tops
my bucket list. Since that’s probably not going to happen
anytime soon, I think working on Humans of Herricks will keep me
busy in the meantime. We have such a diverse community, but how
well do we know the people outside our usual circle of friends?
Stay tuned to the features section! Who knows, you might star in
a Humans of Herricks photograph in the near future.
