A Push Towards Tougher Gun Laws
       By: abhinavtalwar1 Date: August 20, 2012, 9:14 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
The notorious issue of gun control in our country has been the
topic of an ongoing debate. Many people believe that The
Constitution gives each and every citizen in the United States
of America the right to bear arms (the second amendment in the
Bill of Rights). However, the past couple of decades have seen
devastating times due to the abuse of this right.
Recently, increased attention has been given to the debate over
gun violence after a series of disastrous events. Last year, a
man appeared at a democratic convention in Tucson Arizona and
killed several innocent civilians. Just weeks ago, there was a
gunman in a theater in Colorado. Almost immediately after, there
was shooting in a Sikh temple in Wisconsin, and countless other
incidences in between. It seems to me that public life just
       doesn't seem safe anymore.
Gun control supporters were utterly shocked when they found that
nothing was being done to restrict the flow of guns into the
public, especially after all the recent shooting incidences.
Congress had tried to pass a few weak laws to satisfy the public
need- but the laws went absolutely nowhere.
Its appalling that with all the havoc spreading around about the
misuse of firearms, the government has done very minimal so
solve the issue when in fact they are the only ones that can
stop it! The only realistic and reasonable solution to this
reoccurring problem is for the federal and state governments to
make stricter gun control laws. These laws would have to address
certain problems that the public has addressed.
First, it is evident through a series of interviews from CNN
that victims of these shootings (the Aurora Colorado theater
shootings to be specific) feel that creating gun control laws
would only worsen the situation. They believe that decreasing
the amount of legal guns given to the public would just make
criminals turn to illegal methods of getting these weapons, also
called gun trafficking. These people do have a point.
Yet, there are ways to beat gun trafficking. One method that
could be initiated is to regulate the amount of guns issued to a
single person. The driving force behind gun trafficking is one
person buying bundles of guns and selling them off illegally to
people without a license. If a decreased number of weapons are
handed out, the chance of a person receiving an illegally issued
       gun would decrease significantly.
Another major problem the public has been raising their voice
about is the possibility of security through buying a gun. In
fact, the New York Times reported that the gun purchases in
Wisconsin and Colorado sky rocketed after the shooting
incidences. Many civilians reported to the New York Times
reporters that they were simply loading up on “ammo” so that
they could protect themselves incase of future threats.
Im sure there are many people that believe that keeping a gun
hid inside their closet will keep them safer just like the
victims of the shootings do. This is incorrect, and thats not my
opinion, its a legitimate fact. As reported by CNN, keeping a
gun accessible to any family member makes them 43 times more
likely to kill or injure another person severely. Keeping a gun
seems to simply instills a person with a false sense of security
not actual protection. There is no logic in giving up actual
security just to feel safe and protected.
Another controversial issue was found in the Tucson Arizona
shooting incident. Jared Loughner, the perpetrator of the crime
obtained firearms legally. He took these arms to a small
Democratic convention in Tucson and fired off shots at
Democratic representative Gabriel Giffords and many other
ordinary people. Considering he was a registered Democrat, it is
evident that he was mentally ill. To make matters even worse,
Mr. Loughner had already been diagnosed as “unstable” long
before he actually went to buy a gun.
How could anyone possibly sell a gun to a person who was known
to be not mentally well? This is absolute absurdity, and gives
us all a really good reason to be scared. If this man owned a
gun legally, there could be dozens of other people who are not
mentally well owning guns. One method of weeding out these
irresponsible gun users would be to perform a background checks
on each person before they are allowed to buy a gun.
Additionally, anyone who is admitted into a psychiatric
institute would be stripped of their weapon. Not only would this
get rid of medically unsuitable gun owners, but it would also
not allow people with a criminal history to purchase guns.
In the end, the only way to stop the current reoccurring problem
of gun shootings and the killing of innocent people is for the
government to create stricter gun control laws. Simple steps
like performing background checks, limiting selling of firearms,
and even perhaps renewing gun licenses every couple years could
drastically improve the safety of our nation.
