And The SAG Award Winners Are...
       Jenna Florendo ‘15
On January 27, 2013, the 19th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards
(SAG awards) occurred, honoring the great achievements of the
2012 television and film actors and actresses. Taking place at
the Shrine Exposition Center in Los Angeles, and airing on both
TNT and TBS, it had an astounding audience with over 5 million
viewers. The SAG awards are one of the most cherished award
shows because is it a very unique award show. Interestingly
enough, it is the only award show that celebrates solely the
entertainers. During this two hour show, 13 awards are given out
based on outstanding performances in motion pictures, along with
drama and comedy TV series’. Actors and actresses are nominated,
and then selected to win, in an interesting manner as well.
Nominees from both TV and motion pictures are nominated by two
randomly selected commissions of over 2,000 members from all
over the United States. About 100,000 members are then selected
to vote on the nominees and eventually select a winner.
This year the nominees were announced on December 12, 2012.
Movie and television show actors and actresses from many
different picture genres gathered together, for this special
award show. Some TV series and motion pictures had multiple
nominations. Les Misérables and the Silver Lining Playbook were
tied at four, for the most motion picture nominations. Tied at
two nominations were Argo, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and
Skyfall. In the television show catagory, Modern Family held the
most nominations at four. Boardwalk Empire, Breaking Bad,
Downtown Abbey, Homeland, 30 Rock and Game Change were tied at
three nominations in a TV series. In film, the most wins,
however, went to Lincoln. Greatly deserving its awards, Lincoln
illustrated an inspirational story centered on a heart racing
civil war phenomenon. Ben Affleck’s Argo, on the other hand,
stole yet another award in the category of Outstanding
Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. Winning a
well-deserved award, Affleck’s suspense filled and fast paced
film brought you to the heart of an Iranian hostage crisis.
Jennifer Lawrence, Anne Hathaway, Daniel Day Lewis and Tommy Lee
Jones were some of the big winners in the movie categories.
Jennifer Lawrence (Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in
a Leading Role) won her first SAG award, for her work in the
movie the Silver Lining Playbook; playing a widow eager to find
true love. Also accepting her first SAG award was Anne Hathaway
(Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting
Role), who playfully joked with the audience for her work in Les
Misérables. Daniel Day Lewis (Outstanding Performance by a Male
Actor in a Leading Role) and Tommy Lee Jones (Outstanding
Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role) each won
awards for their worthy performances in Lincoln.
In a TV series, the most wins went to 30 Rock. Alec Baldwin and
Tina Fey won Outstanding Performances in a Comedy Series, for
their work in none other than 30 Rock. Upon receiving his award,
Baldwin said, “It was the greatest experience I've ever had.”
Bryan Cranston and Claire Danes won the Outstanding Performances
in a Drama Series award. Cranston won his award for his work in
Breaking Bad and Danes for her performance in Homeland. After
receiving his award, Bryan Cranston joked, “It is so good to be
       bad.”
This year’s SAG award did not disappoint, as the winners were
rightfully chosen in both the categories of motion picture and a
TV series. If you missed the award show this year, it’s going to
be a long wait. The next award show will be on January 18, 2014.
