January 28 marked the 200th anniversary of Pride and Prejudice,
a novel by Jane Austen. Since its publication in 1813, the book
has become one of the most read classic novels, and many readers
claim that it was her best written work. Her story of two
unlikely people falling in love is still beloved to many, even
after 200 years.
Numerous adaptations have arisen since the book’s publication.
First, there are the numerous movie and TV adaptations. The most
widely known in film are the 1940 version starring Greer Garson
and Laurence Olivier, the 2005 version starring Keira Knightley
and Matthew Macfadyen, the Bollywood version titled Bride and
Prejudice, and the 2008 movie title Lost in Austen. On TV, the
most notable is the BBC 1995 version starring Colin Firth and
Jennifer Ehle. There have also been many books written about
Pride and Prejudice, ranging from Austenland by Shannon Hale to
Pride and Prejudice and Zombies by Seth Grahame-Smith. The most
recent adaptation is the web series, The Lizzie Bennet Diaries,
created by Hank Green and Bernie Su. This adaptation brings the
book into modern times in the form of a video blog. It is a
multi-media show that continues to attract new fans, sparking an
interest in many to read the book. There are many other
adaptations besides those that are most widely known, which just
goes to show just how popular Pride and Prejudice continues to
be.
Austen’s book, which followed her previous book, Sense and
Sensibility, was originally titled First Impressions. The novel
is set in the regency era and follows Elizabeth Bennet’s story
as she meets, and eventually falls in love with, Mr. Darcy. The
title reflects Elizabeth’s prejudice towards Mr. Darcy, which
leads her to hate him for much of the first half of the novel.
Her hatred for him also stems from the fact that he is so proud.
Gradually, as the story progresses, she starts to see that her
original view on Mr. Darcy was perhaps wrong and that she had
misjudged him. Their story of love has become one of the most
well-known stories today, not only because of the story of
Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy, but also because many of its key ideas
that still pertain to present day. Though society has changed,
the people, ideas, and actions of the characters can be found in
today’s world and society.
Pride and Prejudice is sure to continue to be widely read and
adapted, constantly drawing in new fans in a wide age range. In
fact, Shannon Hale’s novel, Austenland, is going to be released
in theaters soon, and it will likely bring young people to read
Austen’s novel. As another year rolls around, Pride and
Prejudice is sure to remain in the hearts of many.
