The Inside Scoop on Energy Drinks by Aditya Lakhani '13

Imagine going to school after a long night of finishing your
research paper for history class. You know there’s no way that
you will be able to stay awake in school, at least not without
feeling misery from your tired mind every second of the day. So
there are a few options left: skip school, go to school and drag
yourself through the day, or take an energy drink!
This is just one of many situations that has contributed to the
meteoric rise in the market for energy drinks over the past few
years. As life has speeded up with the advent of new
technologies, the rise in Internet use, and increase in the mass
society culture of America, the need to be energetic and to stay
awake has increased. With this need, room to make money was
created, and that’s when the energy drinks truly shone as a
viable business option. However, many of these newly created and
improved drinks have potentially harmful side effects, and it is
important to know the risks involved with taking by regularly or
even semi-regularly drinking energy drinks.
Ever since the inception of energy drinks, disbelievers have
been present, as with the invention of every new trend in the
world. However, some of the qualms with some of the energy
drinks out there do have real backing.
One of the most highly advertised drinks is the Five Hour
Energy Shot. The ease of taking this as opposed to more sugary
and bigger drinks is a clear advantage, and has caused many
people to try this method of gaining energy. But a clear
drawback to the small size is the psychological impact it can
pose on people. Picture this: the company claims that half the
bottle may be enough energy for many people, but if all it takes
is two gulps to drink the bottle, people may end up with more
caffeine than necessary in their system. Plus, all that caffeine
in a short time rather than taking it in short sips with other
drinks cannot be optimal for your body. But who’s to say the
negatives of a large, sugary, overly sweet energy drink such as
Monster. Another important aspect of Five Hour Energy to address
is it’s “no crash later” claim. Although it is explicitly stated
that this product is sugar free, an inherent advantage over the
other energy drinks, the caffeine in this product can spawn a
moderate to severe crash.
Another popular energy drink is Monster. After taking a sip of
this drink, you may find that this drink tastes great, similar
to a fruity carbonated soda. Packed with sugar and caffeine,
this drink is full of negative materials despite containing a
high B vitamin content and a burst of flavor with very little
calories. Recently, this drink has been linked to five deaths,
one of which may be due to a possible overload of caffeine
present.
And then it’s the everlasting Red Bull, which has maintained
its ground as one of the earliest energy drinks still around
today. Red Bull, similar to Monster, has a tangy taste and is
packed with sugar and caffeine. Though it will definitely
provide a burst of energy, it can lead to side effects similar
to all other energy drinks, such as headaches and insomnia.
Overall, the energy drink mania that has emerged over the past
few years, especially in teenagers and young adults, may pose
serious health consequences. With side effects such as insomnia,
an increased or irregular heartbeat, agitation, irritability and
seizure, these drinks can have serious effects on an individual.
However, these side effects come mostly with frequent and
regular use, so do not fret if you have used an energy drink or
two in your life; what’s important is to remember moderation to
preserve your health. The Food and Drug Administration which
creates standards and regulations for foods and drinks in
America may soon change the requirements for energy drinks.
Remember: caffeine can be addicting. So in regards to energy
drinks, moderation is key.
