It looks like HIDs are falling out of favor for LEDs. What does
that mean for us

Acura, Audi, Lexus, BMW, Mercedes and Toyota have all either
begun to or have completely switched to LED lighting for
headlights. This means a few things I think. The biggest being
the continual decline in availability for OEM HID parts. While
the aftermarket will pick up slack, they aren't quite up to the
optical quality of the OEMs yet.
On the flip side though, I think the aftermarket is long overdue
for LED modules. I know Hella and some other OEMs have started
with the 90mm modules but those are mindblowingly priced. I can
see a simple module with a closed half ellipsoid and 2 CREE LEDs
on a plate connected to a heatsink behind a 3" lens. One would
serve as low beam, one would serve as high beam. They could make
the bowls bigger (which would equate to significantly better
performance- wider hot spot etc) since there would be no bulb
holder or shutters to deal with, and it would still have that
conventional projector look with the ability to have a threaded
shaft and a simple flange as well. You could have TL performance
from an assembly with an MH1 size shaft! And LEDs are coming a
long way. Plus no ballast since LEDs can come in 12V. Just a lot
of advantages to LEDs....
Of course there wouldn't be the ability for customization...
i.e. color modding etc. But a well set up assembly needs no
mods.
What do you think?
