Caring for yourself, not just losing weight

Our focus in the programme is on caring for yourself, looking
after yourself, and starting to meet your needs. I notice that a
lot of people who struggle with weight and eating habits have
low levels of self-care, and their own needs come after everyone
else's, at the bottom of the pile. Then our way of caring for
ourself or treating ourselves is to eat. So let's put aside the
focus on diets, being 'good' or 'bad' and find a balance, where
you can care for yourself and start meeting your needs. Instead
of replying on food or coping by eating. Definitely a more
       balanced approach!

       Ohh, that's a much nice approach. I way too all-or-nothing. I've
been so busy looking after my kids, young one can get sick, but
I get tired form it all, and when I do, I eat. I probably nee a
rest instead! Thinking about taking care of myself sort of takes
the pressure off and just feels better.

One of the ways I've started implementing the self-care is to be
more of a friend to myself, and treat myself like a I would a
friend. I've started checking in with myself during the day "am
I stressed or anxious?, how am I?" I did one thing yesterday to
care for myself- I did my nails and tidied out my handbag, which
was full of receipts. Sounds a bit silly, but I really felt like
I had done something positive for myself J

I feel guilty when I do things for myself. I know I'm always
doing things for everyone else. So the idea of caring for me and
doing things just for me is a but scary. Anyone else? The notion
of caring for myself is soo different!! I'd like to give it a go
       though.

I've stopped weighing myself. I was giving the scales too much
power over me, and letting the scales dictate the kind of day
I'd have. Now it's ALL in the decisions I make and the direction
       I take.

Here 1 thing I'm doing for self-care: I always pick while my
boys are eating dinner, and I never really sit down and eat a
dinner. Or I'm jumping up to get them more mash or milk. Then
it's always crisps that I eat in the evening. So I've started
sitting down and having a proper, tasty dinner. Much more
satisfying, I can tell you! I've noticed that I don't crave food
then in the evenings, which is a big plus!

When I think about self-care instead of dieting, I'm less
panicky about it all. It's way more manageable. Re. self-care
I've been making a bit more time for myself. Now I get in a
babysitter so I can go to aqua-aerobics in the evening! Little
things like that. I've haven't weight myself in ages, but my
clothes are definitely looser. My jeans that I couldn't zip up a
few months ago now feel comfortable! So yeah, self-care is the
       way to go for me.

I notice that the notion of self-care can be quite difficult for
a lot of people, especially if they have been brought up to
believe that looking after themselves is selfish or that if
we're feeling upset we should simply get on with it. I spoke to
a client last week who was amazed at her friend who has a
babysitter look after her daughter while she goes out for a long
cycle or takes some time out for herself. This client couldn't
get her head around it! Yet her friend seems to have a more
balanced life, doesn't struggle with her weight, and definitely
cares for herself. Setting aside some time for yourself even if
it's for something frivolous, such as reading a magazine, is
key. Make a list of things you love to do. Meaningless or
frivolous things, and then for 15 minutes of the day each week,
       do that thing.
Me? I browse clothes online, usually don't buy them, but I can
just zone out and relax for a while!
