Leaving food behind

How are you finding leaving food on the plate behind you, or
leaving behind part of your lunch, if you know you've already
had enough?
It's hard, isn't it?!! I do find it helps when I consciously
remind myself, "This is more food than I need or want. I can eat
again the next time I'm hungry".

Is it a good idea to rey to leave food on your plate, even a
couple of mouthfuls? Finding it hard to know when I'm full. I
just keep eating til the plate is empty!

Ate my lunch more slowly today, and felt a lot more satisfied
than usual!

I've realised that I find it hard to leave food behind I just
have an urge to pack it all in, and part of me thinks, "what if
I get hungry later, I'll regret not having eaten this then?" It
sounds ridiculous now looking at that reason. Yesterday I
reminded myself "if you get hungry later, you can get some food
to eat then". I just went against my normal habit and left part
of my sandwich behind. It sounds like such a small achievement,
but afterwards I felt really good. It was as if I was letting go
of food! Today I'm going to be more conscious again, and put
less food on my plate at dinner time and slow down more when
eating it.

They say it takes 20 minutes after eating for your brain to tell
you that your full. I used to eat so fast that I'd have dinner
gone in 5 minutes, never mind 20. Now when I eat more slowly, I
find it easier to leave some behind. Besides, I usually have
more on my plate than I need.

I find it helps if I put less food on my plate to start with. I
just tell myself that I can have more if I'm still hungry. And I
never am still hungry after. Otherwise I'd keep eating until the
plate is cleared. My mother has a lot to answer for!

It really struck a chord with me when I considered that eating
when you are not hungry is like treating yourself like a
dustbin. I was at work the other day. We have a canteen that
does fab brown bread. A 2 slice serving. I ate one slice. This
was actually my breakfast because I was not hungry when I got
up. I wrapped up the other slice, telling myself if I am hungry
later I can eat the other slice with soup or whatever. So far so
good. Amazingly (for me!) I forgot about the bread until
lunchtime the next day when I had already bought my lunch. So I
got it out and it was slightly stale. But I found it very hard
to bin it. So I buttered the bread (sparingly! lol!). Then I sat
there and thought "why, why, why, would I make myself eat this
when I have a perfectly fresh lunch right beside it? I would not
give this to someone else to eat!? And yet I felt so guilty
throwing it away.
I think its because I was taught to eat up and to waste not want
not, but, also, I think its related to all the times I forced
myself to eat stuff listed in diet programs, because, by God,
this time I was going to stick to this new diet if it killed
me!! E.g., Gagging on Weetabix because it says two weetabix on
some sheet of paper! I would not force anyone else to eat
something that made them gag! Crazy!
Such a relief to be nice to myself :)
