studies suggesting that yoga and other mind-body therapies can
reduce stress-related hyperglycemia and have a positive effect
on blood glucose control.

I think the biggest thing that yoga has given me is perspective.
When things get tough with diabetes, I have to step back,
breathe through it and do my best. That’s all I can do
especially when nothing seems to work. I believe that yoga has
the power to reduce the stress and anxiety, and stop the door
for disease.

A diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes or pre-diabetes may seem to carry
the weight of a life sentence, but for many people, adopting key
lifestyle changes, such as a healthier diet and exercise, can
help manage, reduce, and even eliminate diabetic symptoms. Yoga
one of the cornerstones for controlling one’s blood sugar is
regular and holistic exercise. Doing yoga on regular can reduce
the level of sugar in the blood, along with lowering blood
pressure. Stress is one of the major reasons for diabetes. It
increases the secretion of glucagon (a hormone responsible for
increasing blood glucose levels) in the body. The consistent
practice of yoga aasanas, Pranayam and a few minutes of
meditation can help reduce stress in the mind and protect the
body from its adverse effects. The practice of yoga is also a
proven to lose weight and slow the process of fat accumulation.
Surya namaskar and kapalbhati pranayama are some of the most
effective yoga that aid weight loss.

Diabetes may result due to a lot of genetic-environmental
interactions.During the last few decades, most of the working
population had changed their lifestyle from active working
occupations like agriculture to a less demanding works like
office jobs.Yoga’s primary emphasis is upon gaining general
well-being by the way of integration often incorporating three
major components: held or sequences of physical postures,
breathing exercises and meditation. Yoga is an ancient
discipline designed to bring balance and health to the physical,
mental, emotional, and spiritual dimensions of the individual.

Regular yoga practice can help reduce the level of sugar in the
blood, along with lowering blood pressure, keeping a weight
check, reducing the symptoms and slowing the rate of progression
of diabetes, as well as lessening the severity of further
complications. Let’s see how.
- Like for most lifestyle diseases, stress is one of the major
reasons for diabetes. It increases the secretion of glucagon
hormones in the body, responsible for increasing blood glucose
levels. Consistent practice of yoga asanas (body postures),
pranayamas (breathing exercises) and a few minutes of daily
meditation can help reduce stress in the mind and body. This, in
turn, reduces glucagons and can also help improve insulin
action.
- The practice of yoga is also proven to reduce weight as well
as control increasing weight, which is particularly important to
keep diabetes in check.Sun Salutation and Kapal Bhati pranayama
are one of the best ways to weight loss.
- Diabetes can also be worsened with the occurrence of high
blood pressure, or hypertension. Yoga asanas, such as the Corpse
Pose, Bridge Pose, Child Pose, and Yoga Nidra are all helpful in
controlling hypertension.
- Other yoga postures that are helpful in diabetes include
Vajrasana (kneeling pose), Shoulder Stand, Plow Pose, Lying-Down
Body Twist, Bow Posture, Two-Legged Forward Bend, and Sitting
Half-Spinal Twist.
- Nadi Shodhan Pranayama is also good for diabetics. It helps
release stress and flush out toxins from the body. Another
excellent technique to combat diabetes is a unique breathing
technique, Sudarshan Kriya, designed by Sri SriRavi Shankar. It
has helped several diabetics across the world reduce blood
glucose levels and control their condition from getting worse.
You can learn the technique at an Art of Living Part-1 program.
- A few minutes of regular meditation practice also acts as an
excellent stress-buster for the mind and body. Interestingly,
while stress is the major cause of diabetes, the condition in
turn results in patients getting highly stressed about it, which
further aggravates the problem. It has also been observed that
most diabetics lose self-confidence and end up brooding over
their condition. This is where meditation can help – restoring
their confidence levels so that they gain the strength to fight
the condition and live well.
- Craving for sweets is a common occurrence in diabetes. Regular
practice of meditation can help drop such cravings to a large
extent.

yoga’s benefits for those with diabetes aren’t just physical:
the process can help patients with the condition or its
pre-indicators on more fundamental levels as well. By calming
the awareness and integrating the mind with the body, yoga can
relieve the daily stresses that often lie at the heart of
diabetic symptoms.
The stress we experience in our day to day lives can accumulate,
causing high blood pressure and high cholesterol and leading to
“emotional eating,” which in turn leads to obesity. All of these
symptoms of stress play key roles in the development of
diabetes, and, if managed properly, can prevent the condition
from developing or even turn the tide against it.
Cut from the past to the present, yoga is seen as the ultimate
medicine for all the ailments one has today.
Apart from providing relief from stress and anxiety, yoga
alleviates our mood and restores peace of mind and body. Regular
practice of yoga with an expert aid has the power to bring down
the risks of chronic health conditions which have been haunting
you.

Kapalbhati Pranayama is the excellent pranayama to cure and
control diabetes. Those having high diabetes should practice for
10 – 30 minutes daily in the morning and evening on an empty
stomach. High blood pressure and heart patient should practice
slowly. Our system is a seamless blend of the body, mind and
spirit. An irregularity in the body affects the mind and
similarly unpleasantness or restlessness in the mind can
manifest as an ailment in the body. Yoga poses massage organs
and strengthen muscles; breathing techniques and meditation
release stress and improve immunity.

Truly speaking diabetes has become a common ailment because of
the modern lifestyle. Even though you follow a strict diet plan
and proper medication, it still manifests to severe critical
conditions with many patients because all medications for
treating diabetic patients are based on the concept of
controlling blood sugar. However, controlling blood sugar is not
the cure, having said, high blood sugar is just the effect of
the disease. Yoga exercises on the other hand provide a natural
solution to manage your blood sugar level, reducing the need of
insulin and maintaining your weight. Therefore, it reduces the
diabetics related complication to a substantial level.
