Viewing Privacy settings for our forum

Note: When I set this up, my thought was that it would be an
open and (relatively) public place, much the same as we were at
WaPo. So with only a couple of exceptions, that's how I set the
permissions up.
Someone messaged me today to note that almost everything is
visible even if you're not logged into the site, and I figured
that as with everything else around here, this should be a group
decision.
I can edit the settings so that guests can't see just about
anything. My strong preference would be that we don't do that
because I think we want people to be able to see what the
conversation is in deciding to come join in with us (hoping that
we can still make the existence of it known and available to
join over there). We want people who are finding us to get a
sense of what they're joining and how the site is organized and
if it looks like something they want to be part of. I personally
don't care if what we write here is viewed by CH. Just about all
of it is what we would write on the column, except for the
actual cursing... lol.
I did make the "Our Lives" section visible only to members
because I figured that would be where people might be discussing
stuff that's a little more sensitive and they would prefer not
to have it available for drive-bys to hate on. (And it's noted
in the board descriptions there that only members can see it).
If there's another option that you think makes sense, please let
me know, and I'll add it to the poll (your vote can be changed
at any time until the poll closes in 3 days from the timestamp
on this message.

I need to think about this a bit. But thanks for explaining your
thoughts and reasonings.

ETA- I think keeping Our Lives private is a good idea. Still
thinking, sleeping, on the rest.

I need to look at this site from a browser to add my 2 cents. I
have some other ideas that might be doable/reasonable.
I can't add a gif from my phone and the attachment links post.

So I'm wondering if the families stuff should/could maybe be
moved to our lives, if we keep that members only?

I thought about it and voted before reading Ani's post and my
thoughts almost exactly mirror hers.
I'm not fond of the Jr. Member requirement because I've seen
quite a few posts from people who have said they've come here
because they enjoyed reading the OT, but hadn't posted
themselves. I don't want anyone feeling unwelcome because
they're still shy about jumping in. The floof and food threads
seem like good ice breakers, so I wouldn't want them walled off.

The reasoning behind having a certain number of posts in order
to be "junior member" is so that people don't join just to
scrape information or, you know, post drive bys. If you've made
50 posts, you're probably going to stick around a while.
If I'm not mistaken, there is probably a way to allow someone
access without having the 50 post minimum. Not sure, but I
recall something similar in a different forum with this
software.

What should our viewing privacy settings be?
As they are - guests can see everything, only members can see
"Our Lives" stuff
Members only, they have to join if they want to see it.
Open to guests as is, but make "Our Lives" for Jr members (50
posts minimum) and above.
Thread of the Day viewable to guests, everything else is
members only.
Thread of the Day viewable to guests, everything else is
members and above only, our lives jr members only.
****************************************************************
I think leave the general discussion and today's thread publicly
viewable. Of course you can't post without being a registered
member, so viewing is all they can do. Make everything else
member only.
I'm pretty sure I voted on my phone last night, but this thing
doesn't think I voted.

Yes, the 50 posts is more about joining takes nothing to do.
Engaging with the community takes a bunch. So if you've engaged
with the community by talking on the daily threads and open
areas, it is far less likely that you will misuse information
that people may post that is a little more sensitive in the "our
lives" section.

Also, yeah, if say - Pecan Pie were to show up here, I could
assign her to a category where she could see everything
immediately.

I changed my vote to the new option, membership being free it
seems a low hurdle to reading the daily thread.
Wapo had you sign in to lurk also, so it's not even a new bar.
