I'm not a fan of roasts as comedy. And I think Chris Rock has a
weird obsession with Jada Smith. He didn't deserve an assault
but he did deserve to be challenged.

I think this was the best thing to happen to the Oscars in 20
years.
Award shows are on the decline and this is the most anybody has
talked about it in a long, long time. At the end of the day, all
of their careers are better off from this incident.
I think the Oscars are the worlds best dressed circle jerk and
this year was no different.

We have a habit of printing out the categories and nominees, and
keeping track of the results.
This year we're adding a new category:
BEST CONTROVERSEY
And the nominees are:
Chris Rock for GI Jane 2 "joke" at Jada Pinkett’s hair
Will Smith for slapping and cursing at Chris Rock
Venus Williams’ Wardrobe Malfunction, Nip Slip
AND THE OSCAR GOES TO:
It's a tie: Smith/Rock get to share this imaginary Oscar and the
infamy

I did think about that, but initially felt it didn't quite
'rise' to the level of controversy. Just really bad taste and
not particularly funny.
However, you have a point. If a man had done that to women, all
hell would have broken loose. She can't say it was just a joke
if we don't allow that justification from a man.
So I accept your additional nominee.

This is why I thought at first it was staged. Cheap trick but it
worked. No one was watching, their news alerts went nuts and
they dived for the remote.

I read all the comments carefully, and also unpacked last
night's series of events. Yeah, it was a series - the actual
assault and what came next.
First, it's concerning that Smith had the time to hear the joke,
get out of his seat, get up there and then hit Chris Rock. He
had time to think this through. And he did it anyway.
Next, the Academy deserves some harsh criticism for not having
Smith escorted from the premises. And for not addressing it
then and there. The Academy has made some valid points in the
past about the moral role that art and film have, the mirror it
holds up to society, arguing that actors and writers are the
'canaries in the mine' for what is happening. The Academy has
addressed many difficult issues in the past, from MeToo to
addiction to violence/domestic abuse, to diversity. Here they
failed, in the moment, on their own turf.
Today's one liner on the Academy not condoning violence is
anemic at best.
Some actors bear responsibility for embracing an actor who
committed assault immediately after it happened. For joking
about it. For attending his event and applauding him. "One top
studio executive, who declined to speak on the record, voiced
disappointment in Smith, and in the fact that the audience in
the theater gave him a standing ovation".
If we're able to set aside Hax and AA for a moment, here's a RL
letter being played out in front of us. A mirror showing where
we're at as a society.
Last Oscars I watch for a while. Because not one of the players
involved, even accidentally, did the right thing. In the
moment, or afterwards.
