I get what you are saying, but BBC at least reports "hit" in
their headline, even if they revert to the same use of "slap" in
the body article while repeating the same lines other outlets
have published. I'm not missing the reality. I saw it. I
heard it too. It may not have been an "Ali" hit, but it was a
hit and not a slap. I saw it again this morning on CNN before I
could change the channel. I will probably see it again even if
I try to avoid it.
I haven't heard a thud like that without the crack of a slap
with it from a forceful open handed blow, but I was most often
the person receiving the hits. Different perspective, I
suppose. Rock was wearing a mic. All we heard was "thud".
Opinions on the semantics of hit vs slap may vary, but none of
this is okay.

I guess the moral of the story is that the Oscars aren't a
Friar's Club roast, and a stage isn't a safe place from which to
mock a woman's alopecia (especially when you've mocked the woman
from the stage before).

The academy award show has a long history of lame jokes made at
the expense of actors in the audience, if we are going to allow
each person to slap the person making a joke at their expense,
it's going to run four hours longer.
If you can't take a tiny lame joke, maybe stay home. If you
started your career making fat jokes about Uncle Phil for a
living, maybe you aren't the vessel of love you want to be.
I kinda wish chris rock filed charges, or sued him for $1 or a
million.

Chris Rock made a documentary about black women and hair and the
emotional/racial/identity/cultural issues tied up in it. He
absolutely should not have made that joke, and doesn't get any
passes from me for it. And given that he previously mocked Jada
for boycotting a ceremony that she was far from the only person
boycotting, I'm guessing there is some bad blood going on behind
the scenes there.
But none of that excuses the hit.
Go ahead and boo, or trash talk him in your acceptance speech,
or go to the press after the event. By hitting Chris Rock, he
put himself firmly 100% in the wrong and made Rock the victim.
Especially since laughing at the joke, then hitting, then
screaming about it made Smith look fairly unhinged.
If I was Jada, I would not be happy.

So far, nobody has raised the fact that Jada is a successful and
powerful woman with a platform and voice she has not shied away
from using. Can she not handle this herself? Does she need her
husband, or anyone else, to hit people who upset her? I guess
we will never know. I would not stay with a man who punched a
person because they made a bad joke at my expense. I would be
the most furious at Will Smith (not Chris Rock) if I was her.

It was open handed. Therefore it was technically a slap, even
though it was quite forceful.

I did think about that as well.
While not excusing or justifying the slap, I suspect it was a
heat of the moment/emotional response. That "crime of passion"
as they say.
I will add that it is very awkward, to say the least, that Will
Smith initially laughed at the 'joke'. When he realized that
Jada was not amused, he apparently overreacted, overcompensated.
Again, not justifying, but he's human too, and he handled this
poorly as humans are wont to do.

Yeah, I'm sure he regrets it. Last night should have been about
his award. Now it's about the slap. He'll be kicking himself for
that for a long time.

I agree. Certainly a crime, if Rock decides to press charges,
which seems unlikely.
Smith's "apology" speech was an attempt to sort of justify what
he did in the name of "protection" and "love". That was void of
introspection about what he had just done and seemed much more
about "protecting" himself and his pride around the public
perception of this 6 year old beef with Rock than "protecting"
his wife from a bad joke. If the Smiths are still this upset
about something from 2016, they need to work on that, perhaps
with Rock, but outside of the Oscar ceremony. These are
supposed to be grown ass people (with the ability to get what
they need in the way of therapy) we are talking about, not
impetuous youths full of fire and blind to consequences. He
knew there probably would not be any consequences or he might
have stayed in his seat. Or, he could have been escorted from
the premises after assaulting Rock, and his award accepted by
someone else. I would have preferred the latter.
The Academy sucks here too. It may have been a panic reaction
because it is a live broadcast, but to expect the show to go on,
give Smith his award and extremely long speech time like nothing
happened less than 1 hour later, was an awful decision.

I think there's a back story between Jada Smith, Will Smith and
Chris Rock.
He made jokes about her, when he was hosting the Oscar's in
2016. Will Smith hadn't been nominated for Concussion and Rock
was razzing her about her reaction to that. She wasn't present.
Rock is very aware of the importance of hair to a woman,
especially black women. He made a documentary about it. "Good
Hair" Funny, informative, and occasionally sad, Good Hair is a
provocative look at the complex relationship between African
Americans and their hair.
"GI Jane" was well known for Demi Moore shaving her head. Jada
does it because she has a condition, not for a role.
The joke Chris said wasn't at a celebrity roast, it was live,
directly in front of the couple. This clip shows the unedited
version. Smith appears to laugh, initially, but the look on
Jada's face says it all. Smith was extremely upset. This was an
open faced bitch slap. If he had punched Chris, he wouldn't have
gotten up.

I'm not condoning Will Smith but he definitely reacted.
