I think it was a bad call to put Liza on stage. She appears to
have Parkinson’s and some dementia neither of which seems proper
to showcase at the Dolby. It’s curious to think how such
decisions are made. I was left wondering if Gaga had advocated
for it based on deep appreciation?
Speaking of appreciation, this afternoon we first heard a recent
Stevie Nicks / Miley Cyrus collab, Edge of Midnight. I missed
Miley including a reference in her initial recoding and was
mind-blown today —

It was so wrong on so many levels. There was bad blood from
Rock’s digs at Jada in 2016 and I offer that as context not
justification. “You made me hit you” never flies in my book.
Continuing with musing, can you imagine if Kirsten would have
slapped Amy in the last segment. Interesting to play the gender
flip. We loved her and Jesse in Fargo where they met years ago.
I’m interested if the DA presses charges — I mean the evidence
is pretty indisputable and a victim pressing charges shouldn’t
be needed.

Totally agree not at all comparable for many reasons including
in both cases the woman was being put down so Kristin wouldn’t
be defending Jesse. It was just a set up in my mind to think
about what if a woman from the audience hit a comedian and how
the reaction would be the same or different.
In my mind, if two women, others would more likely have rushed
in rather than sitting to see what happens
🤷‍♀️

Yeah, agree it was a bad call. If Gaga did have any involvement,
I wonder if her work with Tony Bennett influenced her and it.

It’ll be interesting to see what Chris Rock does about it. The
LAPD is saying they can’t touch it unless he files a police
report.

"fighting words," and ask exactly what he thought was going to

Kinda unbelievable how fast the powers that be in Hollywood, or
whoever, seem to have decided they all make far too much money
off of Smith to dare rock the boat? I get why Chris Rock
wouldn't press charges if it would potentially only hurt his own
career, but LAPD, that was not a slap. That was a punch. Why
not call it a punch?
I hate that this behavior seems to be being swept under the rug
or tacitly approved. He should lose this Oscar. He really
should. Who else gets to punch a person publicly like that
while participating in a celebration of their work without any
consequences?
That was the first time I watched the whole Oscars ceremony
since the before times. I was one foot out the door already. I
may never go back now. Something about this just does not sit
well with me even if it seems okay with Chris Rock. I hope
Chris Rock changes his mind and presses charges, but I doubt he
will. Smith's 23 year old son chimed in publicly with something
like "And that's how we do it." Did Chris Rock even know about
her alopecia? I didn't get the press release, maybe he didn't
know either?

what it was. Read the room.

individual slapping another. The individual involved has
declined to file a police report. If the involved party desires
a police report at a later date, LAPD will be available to
complete an investigative report."

I guess the moral of the story is that the Oscars aren't a
Friar's Club roast, and a stage isn't a safe place from which to
mock a woman's alopecia (especially when you've mocked the woman
from the stage before).

I am not defending or making light the bad joke. I am attacking
the bad behavior, an assault, as unjustified. There was no
threat of physical violence from anyone but Smith. There is no
justification for what Smith did. His being enraged over the
joke is not a pass.

Thetis, not defending the action at all - but from what I could
tell (angle a little obscured), it looked more like a slap than
a punch to me, and Rock did describe it as a slap in the
immediate aftermath. Not okay either way, but if getting hung up
on that, I don't think it's being reported inaccurately.
