He had time to think this through. And he did it anyway.

Smith escorted from the premises. The Academy has made some
valid points in the past about the moral role that art and film
have, the mirror it holds up to society, arguing that actors and
writers are the 'canaries in the mine' for what is happening.
The Academy has addressed many difficult issues in the past,
from MeToo to addiction to violence/domestic abuse, to
diversity. Here they failed, in the moment, on their own turf.

disappointment in Smith, and in the fact that the audience in
the theater gave him a standing ovation".

Hot take: anybody who is looking ar the Academy of Motion
Pictures as a moral authority needs to get their head checked.
Will Smith acted with violence and that was inappropriate. Hard
agree. I cannot bring myself to be even the tiniest bit
surprised that the Academy cares about anything besides the
money and conversations the Oscars generate. They ONLY take on
social causes once public opinion is well formed. They knew
about the sexual abuse in Hollywood for generations and did
absolutely NOTHING until the tide of public opinion turned.
The Academy is only moral when it’s convenient which isn’t
morality at all.

Comment originally posted elsewhere, but comprises my overall
take on this:
As expected, all of my FB feed is running wild with the Will
Smith/Chris Rock slap heard round the world.
I don't really have a lot to say about it because there is so
much WTF packed into those few seconds that it is more than I
can fully unpack.
Mostly, I think both men are in the wrong. I think they are both
representative of being human beings and of being themselves.
Not all of one thing or another, but complex people who... are
capable of both screwing up royally and grace.
I also think that what each of them did was stuff that happens
regularly and is accepted as normal or never commented on.
What's shocking to us, as observers, is that we somehow expect
these people that we regard from a distance and put up on
pedestals to not kick the pedestals out from under their feet.
How surprising to us when they are humans! Imagine that.
I think that in the immediate aftermath Chris Rock handled it
well and really kept it together in the moment in a way that
maybe shouldn't be admired and yet I do.
I also think that the Academy, during a show that was
practically a commercial at a lot of points for movies and the
industry and keeping entertainment/Hollywood alive and
financially productive, had a vested interest in keeping Will
Smith an A-List actor. And that drove their choices in removing
Will Smith from the building or not, allowing him to go up and
give his acceptance speech or not, and so on. I think it
behooves us to remember that other people have things invested
in both of these men and how they are treated and act in the
aftermath of this.
I'll be interested to see what happens in the coming days.

Reread what I wrote. The Academy is not a moral guide. I
specifically referred to the role that the Arts play in society,
and to the idea that artists are often at the forefront of
societal commentary and change. Huge difference. :)
Which is why I agree with you on the role of the Academy. They
have had numerous fails, and this one on their own turf, on
their Big Night, and even today can't muster up a position.
They're part of the problem. As are those actors using their
bully pulpits to say the events were acceptable.

Yeah, they're always late to the hashtag party. They were
concerned about one thing and one thing only. How to finish the
show and not lose viewers. Escorting Smith out might have led to
more commotion and having to make an awkward explanation as to
why he wasn't there to receive his award. Neither of which they
wanted to deal with.

Nothing about this incident surprised me. Chris Rock made a
tasteless joke, Will Smith lost his temper, the Academy only
cares about money.
What is there to be surprised about?

I think that is an admirable point of view.

Having seen exactly none of this and watched exactly none of

I’ll sum it up for you:

I actually don't care that much. I do think that it's publicity
which means that everybody in this whole scenario wins,
especially whoever broadcast it. It is this which makes me
think it was scripted.

My personal opinion only.
Chris Rock and Will Smith beef was arranged. They needed more
people to actually give a shit about the Oscar’s and fighting is
the way to do it, especially between two household names.
Will Smith was only supposed to yell something back, the hit was
a genuine surprised to Chris Rock, likely because he’s been
running his mouth his whole career and hasn’t been hit yet.
