Lent 2022
By: LabPartner Date: March 1, 2022, 3:24 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
So March 2 is Ash Wednesday. Is anyone doing anything special
for the season? I'm not really one to tell anyone what I do as
sacrificial acts, so I'm changing my usual rule: instead of not
saying anything at all, I'm just sharing with my invisible
friends.
As per my usual custom, I only have 2 meals a day and don't eat
between meals. Also, I give up soda (which some of you call pop
and others of y'all call Coke). There's going to be one other
thing, but I'm not even sharing that with invisible peeps until
--- maybe --- the end of the season.
If you'd like, please share your Lent stuff here.

Not Catholic, so I usually mark Ash Wednesday by thinking it's
strange that so many people on the train have dirty foreheads,
and then realizing later after a few cups of coffee that hey!
It's Wednesday! In early March! It's probably Ash Wednesday! And
then I spend the rest of the day impressed that those people
managed to go to church before I was even awake enough to
realize that a bunch of strangers don't just all have dirt in
the same spot on their forehead for no reason.
Except I don't take the train on Wednesdays anymore. So that
won't happen this year (it didn't last year either).

I have given up Lent for Lent. ;-)
Just kidding, but I don't do the traditional things any longer.
I had a coworker that was a very good Catholic, like you. During
Lent he would typically do some fasting. One year, after Lent,
he had been fasting for one day a week. A few years later he
started fasting 2 days a week. Jmani and I miss him because we
would watch our language around him. He never said anything to
us, but we knew our salty language made him uncomfortable and we
would self-police. Now that he's retired, we don't watch our
language as much.
Back when I was practicing, and my kids were small, I asked my
son what he was giving up for Lent. He said he was giving up
lying for Lent!

French fries are off the list for forty days and nights
So many other ways to have potatoes, should be fine.
All the cheeseburgers, but none in paradise.

I grew up in a devout Catholic family. When I was in grade
school, I would give up something different every day. One day,
being a potato lover, I didn’t give them up, but I asked for the
least browned ones at the dinner table. I loved those browned
potatoes. Small steps…
