LT — In what seems like forever ago, one of our sons got a
serious infection after a big knee surgery so 48 hours after
initial discharge we returned to the hospital for a nine-day
stay to try to save his leg from amputation as the infection
grew. After multiple antibiotic tries, a touch-and-go situation,
and another surgery to clean and inlay antibiotic beads
throughout the wound, we were finally discharged and continued
IV antibiotics at home via a pic line that dropped in by his
heart. None of the details probably matter, but only shared as a
set up to address Pain - which with infections is excruciating.
       What we found was:
       - opiates suck but were necessary for the intense pain - add
senna (natural lax) to the pill mix because constipation makes
       pain much worse
       - repositioning for the pain was needed all the time, every 30
minutes 24 hours a day - I stayed at the hospital 22 hrs a day
for 9 days and we soldiered through together
       - wonderful care meant so much to us as I’m sure it does to your
family. The selflessness and ongoing support of the hospital
       care team was amazing
       - the “winner” accessory for repositioning were “alligator butt
plugs” (ABPs) named that by sons because they looked like an
alligator mouth and often were used to prop his hips
       - recommend you get some ABPs — they were provided by the Ortho
PAs at the hospital and look like soft egg crates that are
folded in half and thus a bit bouncy and provide some puff-up
resistance. So much better than pillows, blankets, or teddy
       bears
       - video games during the opiate withdrawals were invaluable
I hope you can find some ABPs and that D’s pain lessens and his
healing quickens. Grateful for your updates and sending much
       love. VB 🦄
(PS - son’s leg is fine, heart is fine, and he is now a fabulous
husband and father to our twin grands … don’t want anyone
worried that all didn’t end well.)

I've not been around much so hopefully my late mojo wish will
still help. Actually, now that I think of it, magical mystical
Haznut mojo never expires: it only gets stronger over time...

       Saturday morning update:
"The good news: D was moved from ICU to a therapy floor on
Friday afternoon. He had a PT session already Saturday morning
and is highly motivated. Docs are predicting he will go home in
1-2 weeks. The bad news: A LOT of discomfort at night. He’s
running a low temp but they’re watching it closely. Blood work
       all looks good."
I think it's amazing that they think he'll be home in "just" 1-2
weeks. Daily mojo has been sent.

       Oh, poor sweetie!
They can do amazing things at a good rehab center--my mom and
stepdad have each spent a couple weeks in one over the past 13
       months.
Hope his nights get easier. Mojo for continued healing and pain
       management.

Poor D, the nights must be rough. Still, very encouraging news,
thanks for sharing. Mojo for each night to be less painful for
him than the last, and healing for all.
