We love the whiskey marinated recipe from the wsj (no paywall).

Apparently you have to have a WSJ subscription to see them but I
googled "whiskey marinated salmon" and there were lots of good
       results. Thanks for the idea!

Here's one of several articles about the rise in the cost of
vanilla extract. Looks like we're stuck with it for a while.

Interesting idea to substitute bourbon. Thanks to Rick we always
have that on hand :) I tried to substitute almond extract the
other day in a smoothie for my daughter and it was... not good.
If they have whole beans at TJ's I will grab some and try that
       vanilla sugar idea.
       Thanks for posting that!

Doh! I googled wsj whiskey salmon in an incognito window.
Screenshots attached. The grill method makes it really easy to
       not screw up.

TJ’s vanilla bean paste is so good.
They also have a spatchcock pre-marinaded chicken that’s really
good for busy nights. And the pumpkin pasta. I cannot get out of
       there for less than $200.

If you can find vanilla beans, snatch them up and make your own
vanilla. You'll need either an opaque bottle, or to store it in
a dark place. Add a bunch of beans, and alcohol. I use vodka,
but bourbon is a good base too. For the first few weeks, every
time you're in that cabinet, shake the bottle. After that you
can let it sit at least 6 months.

I have done this and given as gifts. I used vodka the first
time, but have plans to do it again and use bourbon and rum as
bases so that we can compare them. For obvious reasons that’s a
       super long term project. 😉

Chili pintos and rice topped with a dollop of coconut milk
yogurt, roasted pumpkin seeds, roasted sweet corn, diced
avocado, and diced orange bell pepper.
