General Discussion
• Be civil.
• No hate speech or slurs.
• Heated debate is fine. Going after and attacking each other is
not.
• Speak TO each other, not about each other or other posters
from CH.
• If you think someone is out of line, attempt to talk to them
directly about it before flagging for moderation.
• Please use the available tools to make this the best
experience for yourself - including ignoring other users and
topics.
• We understand that the ignore function has a deficiency in the
quote system, in that user's words will be visible to those who
have them on ignore if they have been quoted by someone else.
For this reason, we ask that you do not quote others who you
have reason to believe that many people have on ignore.*
• Do not quote a post that you have reported as rising to the
level of offense (in violation of the Community Rules) that it
needs to be handled by the moderation team, as quoting them will
make the offending post visible to more people and make it
harder for the community and moderation team to handle it
without creating an uproar that can be avoided.*
• It is not acceptable to violate forum rules yourself to
address someone that you think is out of line.*
Doxxing/Sock puppets:
• Coming back under a new name is fine, but accounts should not
overlap. If they do overlap, penalties applied to one will be
applied to both, all the way through to banishment.
• It is fine to politely ask someone if they were previously X
poster, either publicly or privately. Politely means 1x not 5+
times if they are not giving an answer or someone doesn't
believe them.
• It is not fine to accuse someone of being someone else or
declare that they are, and that is a points worthy offense.
Undefined
It would be impossible to write a policy that captured every
specific variation of inappropriate behavior, and we probably
would not want to be part of a space that tried. Therefore
please note that if something appears that it may be a problem,
the mods will collectively discuss (it will never be a "one or
two mods" thing) and choose how to address it within the steps
laid out in the moderation policy.
Note: The Thread of the Day is a free-for-all and you can post
whatever you want on it, you are not limited to having to post
about things in the "designated sections". Those are mostly for
ongoing specific conversations, not intended to prevent you from
sharing your thought/need/etc. where most of the convo is
happening.
Additional note:
The "Optimism" button has been repurposed to be "Mojo"
The "Dumb" button has been repurposed to be "Annoyed/Mad/The
people IN this post (not the poster) are dumb"
Private Messages
Private messages may not be used to harass a member. The option
to report a private message for moderation IS enabled.
Advertising
Promoting a personal business may be allowed ONCE. Do not use
this forum as a method of advertising.
Penalties
Please see the Moderation Policy for complete information. If
you collect a sufficient number of points (and there will be
discussions if you're approaching a milestone), you may be
penalized in one of the following ways: Temporarily muted.
Suspended. Permanently Banned.
N.B. Clarification on what counts as a Personal Attack:
* Hax, Bezos, Gov Abbot, et al, public figure., may be commented
on freely.
• Any group or crowd of people: (aka group of people sharing a
common view or behavior, that is not based on personal faith,
innate characteristic, etc.) - CROWD. Not singular named person,
and views may be expressed freely.
• Singular, named, non-public figure person: It would be one
thing to say "so and so's posts on today's column are really
annoying me", whether they are there for it or not. It's another
thing to say "So and so displays all the X of Y" or other
targeted comment. The former is fine as a personal expression
(or "I" statement). The latter is not.
These are the boundary lines within which we will consider
something to be a personal attack or not.
If you think we're missing some rules, please send me a private
message and I'll either add it or put it up for discussion.
-----
Please note: You will have to complete a captcha when you make
your first post OR if you are trying to send someone a personal
message without having made any posts yet. I understand it's
annoying but the purpose is to prevent spambots proliferating
here.
