First, Hey Rick! Good to see you and I cheered your message to
       Hax!
       Second: The Purge
What concerns me is that the staff is massively purging the
comments in Hax. Not just a few, but to the tune of hundreds of
deleted posts at the end of the day. Tom first pointed out that
over 500 posts were removed two days ago, and last night over
600 posts were deleted at the end of the day.
Tell me that 600+ people violated community guidelines by using
profanity or were wildly OT and talked about dinner plans? Not
       by a long shot.
This seems like the WaPo is going in retroactively and deleting
posts for content. Anything they don't agree with, goes. This
is quite Orwellian for a paper whose masthead talks about
democracy dying in darkness. And who is deciding which posts
have acceptable content, even if they don't violate the posted
guidelines? And why should the posted guidelines be a mirage,
with the real rules known only to the staff?
These massive deletions and cullings of posts are chilling to
me. Especially since they take place en masse.

       Great to see you PB!
Oh wow, that is creepy. This is all crazy to me. I don't think
she thought this through--like at all.

I think in general comments sections are on the way out. They
are more of a chore and liability than they are worth and
undermine the gravitas of the reporting in many cases. The NYT
keeps a really tight rein on comments with pre-publication
censoring and monitoring, but it's labor-intensive and seems to
be arbitrarily done by low-level workers.
I don't see much difference between scrubbing them before they
pop up or soon after; it's still a reminder that these are
commercial enterprises that have zero obligation to provide a
soapbox for random passersby. We are free to take it or leave
       it.

Well, you may be right and comments may be on the way out....but
I think the policy around them should be clear. :)
And as for scrubbing them? I have an issue with the WaPo saying
"Here are our guidelines", when in fact different guidelines
exist that apparently go to post content and those are not made
public. When there are secret rules known only to moderators
and staff, that's an ethical issue.
And doing it "under the cover of darkness" is just an
authoritarian rewriting of history. It doesn't go down well.
If there's an issue, tell people.

Again, these comments area may loom large for individual
subscribers but as a component of the overall operation they are
minutia. How much thought are they supposed to put into the
moderation policies; it's not a Supreme Court opinion. It's
some low-level webbie doing the best they can, not a vast
authoritarian conspiracy against the subscribers. News
organizations are not obliged to be a forum for any and all
       opinions/announcements/points of view.
To put it in perspective, do you suppose the CEO of a health
system spends much time worrying about what's on the menu in the
cafeteria or what's for sale in the gift shoppe? Whether or not
vegetarian and gluten-free fare is sold, or whatnot, might be
important to the individual visitor, but it's really a drop in
the bucket to what the system's management has to worry about.
They really don't care if people like the food or if they bring
their own brown-bag, or if they go hungry and stop at McDonald's
on the way home. By the same token, I doubt the executives of
the WaPo waste time trying to trick, thwart or undermine a tiny
       handful of subscribers.

Huh, I did not know SME referred to Subject Matter Expert. When
I was in business school, and then when I worked at an
enterprise software company, SME meant Small and Mid-size
       Enterprises.
I learn a lot here from all you folks!

       Hellooooo rick!
We are neglecting to dump on her for her pompous explanation
about why she made the decision, including a reference to the
fact that the squabble was distracting her from her "core
       responsibilities."

Just to be clear and not leave something wrong standing....I am
not seeing this as a "vast conspiracy" against Hax posters.
Good God. What I am commenting on is the actual practice of
removing hundreds of comments that do not, apparently, violate
the posted guidelines. So posters don't know about them. Not
fair or ethical. And it is someone's decision to remove the
comments, and to decide which posts qualify beyond the
       guidelines.
       Have a good one. :)

She has almost 130,000 followers on Facebook. That doesn't mean
they read her every day, but it probably makes her feel good.

I'm not on FB but it would be great if that number plummeted.
