...It wasn't really a badge of honor for a columnist to have a
motley clique attaching themselves every day to her output. ...
Yeah, except she has that facebook page and all those followers
that still comment to her there. Yes?
She wants that "badge of honor" that she has so many followers
but she doesn't want to have to deal with any of the fallout
that may arise. As it has. I feel that most of that negative
shit that's all over the comments section now is those people
that came over from FB.
But Facebook is not the WaPo site; her editors and colleagues
likely are not viewing her FB page. I think she is trying to
spruce up her professional reputation a bit, either because of
the new exec editor, general chopping-block issues, wanting to
go out on a dignified note or some other motivation. Being the
destination repository for a lot of off-topic TMI & squabbling,
especially as it became increasingly unseemly and off-color, is
not what most writers aspire to.

She has almost 130,000 followers on Facebook. That doesn't mean
they read her every day, but it probably makes her feel good.

I am an old clueless person and don't know very much about
social media but I guess I thought that on social media
followers were more than just a bragging rights thing. I
thought there was money in it? Somehow? Or brought ways to
make money?
This is of course separate from WaPo itself which I am fully
convinced doesn't give two shits about the disgruntled OT-ers on
one columnist's comment section.

I know WaPo isn't going to miss Lil Ole Me like I was some kind
of buying powerhouse that pleased the advertisers to no end, but
I did buy a LOT of stuff from the target marketing designed to
suit my tastes - I'd never been mined so effectively and
accurately before.
WaPo spent a TON of money on that software - maybe that's why
they couldn't pay to bring back the little OT checkbox... :-\
The real problem, as I've pointed out repeatedly from my
experiences with software changes and projects: the people
making the buying decision weren't the people who would be using
the software, and it never occurred to them to consult anyone to
find out what the software needed to be able to do. And in this
instance (unlike the last one with which I was involved), there
was no higher-up listening to any SME who could explain why the
path to what they wanted ran directly and only through the
garden of what we wanted. So the money was spent, it was spent
foolishly, and their foolish mistake directly created the
"problem" that was the pretext for the complaints.
Yep. I worked for a massive and expensive corporation that had
me as one of the smes they rolled the software out to for
testing. After about two hours they asked and I said why the f
didn't you talk to me BEFORE this.
WTF does SME stand for??
I did google but I don't see anything that fits in context.

I dropped in yesterday on the WAPO site, and as someone else had
mentioned, the comment section was basically 3 or 4 opinions
voiced by everyone with their own personal details thrown in.
So I flagged a bunch of OT comments, and then posted my own
saying that I've had a cough since June and it would annoy
people in public, declared that made me on topic, and stated
that the moderators are impotent because most of the comments
are barely on topic if at all. It was taken down lightning
fast. Oh and I might have asked if Carolyn was happy with her
new boring comment children. I'm done there. My respect for CH
has been dwindling over the last couple years and has taken a
nosedive over this. On the bright side, it has made me realize I
come here for all of you, not for her column after all. So
yeah, good job, Carolyn, or can I call you Felicia?
I dropped in last night, after reading some others here posting
about it. So I went over and had some laughs, gave my likes to
the people I like. I also made a very much ON TOPIC post about
how I have a sister that has a cough and could this have been
her? Once she gets into a coughing fit, it's hard to stop and I
can see it's hard on her.
It's been removed. No idea why.
C'est la vie
I suspect the mods over there will be removing a lot of
comments, on topic or not, from those of us over here. It's not
like they're well-paid or supervised.

First, Hey Rick! Good to see you and I cheered your message to
Hax!
Second: The Purge
What concerns me is that the staff is massively purging the
comments in Hax. Not just a few, but to the tune of hundreds of
deleted posts at the end of the day. Tom first pointed out that
over 500 posts were removed two days ago, and last night over
600 posts were deleted at the end of the day.
Tell me that 600+ people violated community guidelines by using
profanity or were wildly OT and talked about dinner plans? Not
by a long shot.
This seems like the WaPo is going in retroactively and deleting
posts for content. Anything they don't agree with, goes. This
is quite Orwellian for a paper whose masthead talks about
democracy dying in darkness. And who is deciding which posts
have acceptable content, even if they don't violate the posted
guidelines? And why should the posted guidelines be a mirage,
with the real rules known only to the staff?
These massive deletions and cullings of posts are chilling to
me. Especially since they take place en masse.
