I know WaPo isn't going to miss Lil Ole Me like I was some kind
of buying powerhouse that pleased the advertisers to no end, but
I did buy a LOT of stuff from the target marketing designed to
suit my tastes - I'd never been mined so effectively and
accurately before.
WaPo spent a TON of money on that software - maybe that's why
they couldn't pay to bring back the little OT checkbox... :-\
The real problem, as I've pointed out repeatedly from my
experiences with software changes and projects: the people
making the buying decision weren't the people who would be using
the software, and it never occurred to them to consult anyone to
find out what the software needed to be able to do. And in this
instance (unlike the last one with which I was involved), there
was no higher-up listening to any SME who could explain why the
path to what they wanted ran directly and only through the
garden of what we wanted. So the money was spent, it was spent
foolishly, and their foolish mistake directly created the
"problem" that was the pretext for the complaints.
What does SME stand for?
Subject Matter Expert - generally this is the person who is well
versed in the subject, or has all the institutional knowledge.
Prior to the switch, I was banging the drum that they have
either lost or not been paying attention to their institutional
knowledge.

I agree about the loss. I just don't think she cares. Dumped
is dumped and we're like the ex who keeps explaining why it was
a bad idea. She doesn't want to hear it.
I made that up.
Wild speculation: She figures that we'll all fade away and a
new set of posters will set up their own shop and a new
community will grow and in the end it's all just the same old
same old. That is, if she even thinks about it at all, which I
kind of doubt.
Of one thing I am certain: she won't back down, apologize or
admit she might have been wrong. Partly because she doesn't care
that much and partly because that is not in her DNA.
Oh, I agree Hax has never apologized or admitted a mistake in
that space since I have been there. I know someone who is
involved in digital media marketing. Site hits a day and time
spent on site are what dictates what they can charge to
advertisers. That will definitely be tanking with this change.
We'll see how much they generate from ads on those sites. If it
is a real generator, I can see WAPO stepping in. Although the
damage is done now. Probably irreversible.

Selfishly, childishly, mean-spiritedly, whatever, I really hope
that a huge number of us stay away from the comment section,
chats, hoots, all of it.

...It wasn't really a badge of honor for a columnist to have a
motley clique attaching themselves every day to her output. ...
Yeah, except she has that facebook page and all those followers
that still comment to her there. Yes?
She wants that "badge of honor" that she has so many followers
but she doesn't want to have to deal with any of the fallout
that may arise. As it has. I feel that most of that negative
shit that's all over the comments section now is those people
that came over from FB.

I have been shocked at the exodus over there. There is almost
no one posting who visited regularly. And there is almost no
discussion at all. Just a bunch of drive-bys posting short
posts. No replies or actual interaction.
I would have thought some people would hang around out of habit
but everyone seems to have left in unison.
And now we have this great lifeboat for the Hax refugees :)

Subject:Death of a Community
I read your explanation on why you thought you had to ban OT
form the comment section. I still don't get it.
That community, which is pretty much gone now, was responsible
for so much good in the world. People fell in love, they healed
from broken hearts, they grieved terrible losses, they
laughed--boy did they laugh. That was nowhere else in the WAPO
comment section--not even sure it was anywhere else on the
internet. That was all done with OT comments.
And you blew that up because some people couldn't scroll past
some posts? WAPO couldn't stomach paying for some coding
changes to add that little damn checkbox?
The comments are way down and many are canceling their subs as
soon as they are able. So there is definitely loss in revenue
over this mistake.
I am not sure who wins here but you've changed your comment
section to be the same colorless comment section that exists in
the rest of WAPO's columns.
Congratulations.

Rick, a couple things. First, I am SO glad you're here. I
haven't seen you or BP lately and have been hoping you'd turn
up. Second, I love what you said to Carolyn, and third, I am
glad that it was you who said this. I know my message to her
went in the proverbial bin because I'm part of The Problem, so
having you say what you did is priceless. Thank you.

It would make me too sad to watch the comment section turn into
a mean-spirited cesspool with no pushback on it at all. So... I
am still dabbling there. But... I decided that my line is that
so much of what made the community and the real WORTHWHILE
advice/usefulness of the comment section was the stories that
people tell from their own lives. That's what makes it
relatable. It personalizes it, and it gives a dimension to it
that doesn't exist otherwise.
But... talking about my life also makes me and my life "known"
to other people and it's learning about others lives that has
made me truly care about them. It's what's made me want to check
in on them and know how life is going for Bee's transfer,
Pecan's transfer and her
living-out-of-a-hotel-room-due-to-an-emergency-remodel-post-floo
ding
issues, VB's Dilly and parenting and remodeling delights,
ChiGirl's move and what ChiTot and JoJo are up to, Dat's health
issues, TC's house updates, and so and so forth eternally
including what's for damn dinner.
And if that portion isn't welcome... then you can't have the
pieces of my life that I would otherwise share to make my
comments more insightful or whatever, and you damn sure can't
have them to make your Hoots successful.
Sorry, I'm an all or nothing kind of woman on this.

I dropped in yesterday on the WAPO site, and as someone else had
mentioned, the comment section was basically 3 or 4 opinions
voiced by everyone with their own personal details thrown in.
So I flagged a bunch of OT comments, and then posted my own
saying that I've had a cough since June and it would annoy
people in public, declared that made me on topic, and stated
that the moderators are impotent because most of the comments
are barely on topic if at all. It was taken down lightning
fast. Oh and I might have asked if Carolyn was happy with her
new boring comment children. I'm done there. My respect for CH
has been dwindling over the last couple years and has taken a
nosedive over this. On the bright side, it has made me realize I
come here for all of you, not for her column after all. So
yeah, good job, Carolyn, or can I call you Felicia?
I dropped in last night, after reading some others here posting
about it. So I went over and had some laughs, gave my likes to
the people I like. I also made a very much ON TOPIC post about
how I have a sister that has a cough and could this have been
her? Once she gets into a coughing fit, it's hard to stop and I
can see it's hard on her.
It's been removed. No idea why.
C'est la vie

Thanks so much, Min. I really appreciate it. She reads those
chat submissions so she has seen some of our feedback, anyway.
I wrote it to get it off my chest. I don't have any illusions
about it changing anything. I think the damage is irreversible
in any event.
