Re: What I sent to HAX about the OT ban

I'm a little curious how she's gonna do the hoots without a
bunch of tangential/OT stories.
She kinda covered her ass on that last chat with this:
Next Friday is our Pan-Hoot day, which ... well, we'll
see. Still doesn't seem right to hoot about weddings that
haven't been happening, but it would be great if we could find
some cracks of daylight (or butt cracks, who am I kidding) in
this whole mess. We'll roll with it and if the material doesn't
hit the moment right, I'll just make it a Q and A day.
So see if there aren't enough hoot stories it's the pandemic's
fault not anything else.

I actually thing it may have bugged her how much we didn't talk
about her column in there.
Except that we did. Vigorously. It just wasn't the ONLY subject
of conversation towards the end of the day.
And frankly, she would have done herself a lot of favors to have
noted that the chat-originating columns were coming from the
height of the pandemic. Because those days would be full of "LW
is an idiot to have gotten themselves into this position. But
here are all the ways they can try and solve it [list of things
not available during pandemic].
I know that she thought the advise SHE was giving would have
some universal application, but she missed the mark on that...
because she forgot that people read her advice, but they don't
stop at her advice or always agree with it. And I thought that
it treated the LWs who wrote in pretty poorly to set them up to
get bashed in the way that they did on those days.
This is where I lost a LOT of respect for her, particularly
after I e-mailed to say "Hey! Can you make sure to pay attention
to this, because it's creating issue" and not a single thing
happened to adjust. Not because she should be listening to *me*
per se... but in terms of pro-active management... if you can be
concerned about a concert-vs-wedding war in your comments, well
geez... shouldn't you also be paying attention to an "I'm giving
people the wrong end of this stick with how I'm presenting this"
issue?
Ooooooh. I totally missed that. Well alrighty then. Sure. People
probably have lots of awesome "shit that happened during this
pandemic" story. I know I have a few. But, as previously noted,
I'm not submitting them to the chat.

Her pay is the same with or without OT commenters and without
them she doesn't have to take any ribbing about the
objectionable content publicly attached to her work product. It
wasn't really a badge of honor for a columnist to have a motley
clique attaching themselves every day to her output. Amusing
for us but eventually embarrassing for her.
The WaPo has a digital circulation upward of 2 million. The ad
execs don't care about a couple hundred readers of the features
pages.
If I had to bet my 401k I'd put it on the "CH is smug, relieved
and enjoying a bit of schadenfreude" square.

I have wondered what would happen if we all went back and set up
camp on the daily Ask Amy column.

I know WaPo isn't going to miss Lil Ole Me like I was some kind
of buying powerhouse that pleased the advertisers to no end, but
I did buy a LOT of stuff from the target marketing designed to
suit my tastes - I'd never been mined so effectively and
accurately before.
WaPo spent a TON of money on that software - maybe that's why
they couldn't pay to bring back the little OT checkbox... :-\
The real problem, as I've pointed out repeatedly from my
experiences with software changes and projects: the people
making the buying decision weren't the people who would be using
the software, and it never occurred to them to consult anyone to
find out what the software needed to be able to do. And in this
instance (unlike the last one with which I was involved), there
was no higher-up listening to any SME who could explain why the
path to what they wanted ran directly and only through the
garden of what we wanted. So the money was spent, it was spent
foolishly, and their foolish mistake directly created the
"problem" that was the pretext for the complaints.

Right, because there hasn't been a pandemic for a year and a
half already. ::)

I dropped in yesterday on the WAPO site, and as someone else had
mentioned, the comment section was basically 3 or 4 opinions
voiced by everyone with their own personal details thrown in.
So I flagged a bunch of OT comments, and then posted my own
saying that I've had a cough since June and it would annoy
people in public, declared that made me on topic, and stated
that the moderators are impotent because most of the comments
are barely on topic if at all. It was taken down lightning
fast. Oh and I might have asked if Carolyn was happy with her
new boring comment children. I'm done there. My respect for CH
has been dwindling over the last couple years and has taken a
nosedive over this. On the bright side, it has made me realize I
come here for all of you, not for her column after all. So
yeah, good job, Carolyn, or can I call you Felicia?

Yep. I worked for a massive and expensive corporation that had
me as one of the smes they rolled the software out to for
testing. After about two hours they asked and I said why the f
didn't you talk to me BEFORE this.
