Re: What I sent to HAX about the OT ban

Rick, I keep checking this thread to see if there's been any
response from Hax or her producer, and although I'm not at all
surprised there's been nothing, it's still a little bit
disappointing. [emoji20]

It was the peremptory attitude of the announcement that inspired
me to cancel my subscription. WaPo was pretty duplicative for
news in any case. I mostly subscribed fot the Hax community.

But I am mixed on commenting on Hax there, partly because I'm
so disgusted with them for the decision and the way they rolled
it out. Right now I'm jumping in over there, not daily, but then
when I see a low comment count I have some not very nice sense
of satisfaction and refrain so that I don't drive it up. Wapo
can suffer with the reality of their low count and the, imo,
incursion of more of the trashier commenters (without us to show
them the door.)
[/quote]
I commented when this site opened that it would be my go-to
site, and that I would not be adding any substantial comments to
Hax's column. An occasional peek only.
My analogy was to see the situation as akin to having a
neighborhood cafe or pub where a group of friends congregated.
If the bar owner decided to summarily kick out and permanently
ban half of the group, would you really go back and sit at that
half-empty table while your friends were outside? And would you
keep buying drinks there and helping the bar owner turn a
profit?
I wouldn't. I would find a new place to drink. Where my
friends were welcome. :)
So, I will keep the WaPo subscription for now, since I've read
in there for a long, long time. The political reporting and the
caliber of the journalists is important to me. I don't see Hax
as a hard news journalist, so that's a distinction. (And she
likely doesn't see herself that way either, fwiw). But I will
see how their "Democracy Dies in Darkness " plays out.

This is me as well. I only gave WaPo money because that was the
only way to comment to the group. My subscription is about to
run out and I will not renew. at this point they would have to
give it to me for free. I will continue to give The Guardian
money, I still have AP and Reuters on my phone and get hot news
notifications there. I will miss the comics, and that's about
it.

I haven't made the effort to cancel because the WAPO news is
still better than the local USA Today rag. But I'm realizing
that the main attraction really was the OT crowd. I really
enjoy reading about people's lives--and during the pandemic, it
really did help replace the usual banter with my neighbors.
I hope to get to know you better now that it's a less public
place.

I sent the following to Carolyn today:
Hi, Carolyn. Did you decide to cut off OTers in WaPo comments
because you were getting lots of emails from people who were
tired of not seeing enough on-topic comments? Or was it a matter
of growing tired of seeing the OT wars in the comment sections?
I understand your desire to no longer be stuck in the middle,
but I'm interested to know what the final straw was.
It seems to me like the comment sections linked to your articles
in the Post are now about as friendly as Amy Dickinson's and
Miss Manners's are--in other words, mostly snarky and negative.
Lots of making fun of the LWs, and criticism of your letter
choices.
I hope you had a pleasant vacation, and good luck with today's
chat.

Will update if I receive a reply.

My subscription ended yesterday. They won't be getting any
additional money from me. My guess is Hax will never address
this again. For all her advice to the contrary, she isn't much
on apologies or admitting mistakes.

I'm keeping my subscription, Rick--mostly for the recipes and
the weekly cooking chat. The New York Times charges extra for
recipe access, and I like the recipes in the WaPo better,
anyway.
I don't think Carolyn cares how many people have dropped their
Post subscriptions because of her decision. That's not how she
rolls. And I suspect the Post isn't exactly hurting, either.
