Re: What I sent to HAX about the OT ban

I honestly doubt the advertising execs at WaPo are happy about
what's happened. When they first announced the OT ban, I assumed
comments might drop by about 200-300 at most. I really thought
people would still stay and comment mostly on-topic. But I've
been stunned by how few comments there are on her columns. She's
at 547 right now; normally she'd be at 1000 by this time of day.
I can only assume the pageviews are significantly down too.
Since it seems that the decision to go OT was totally CH's, I
guarantee there are conversations going on about how this
traffic drop will affect their numbers.
Ironically, I think most of us would have stuck around if it
hadn't been for that dig she got in on last Friday's column.
That was just insulting. I don't think it occured to her that
people would pick up and leave en masse.

The crack about the commentariat argument in this column.

I honestly believe that the commentariat comment would have gone
over as a complete and utter laugh "yup, she knows how it works
around here" IF that hadn't come in the same week as the OT ban.
Combined, it just did NOT come off the same way. And it is very
likely that they were not supposed to coincide, they just
happened to because of when different decisions were made.

I'm childishly boycotting. Could someone cut and paste the
offending remark?

Indeed. I found her dig at the Hax OT community - especially
after she had suggested a chat LW come to the Hax OT community
for emotional support just weeks prior - was extremely
offputting. It really did seem like she threw the community
under the bus to help herself. Her choice, but I can choose to
leave so that is what I did. I have read the letter/letters
most days in order to comment about them here, but I have not
even entered the comment section or the chat. I will stop
reading the letters when my subscription runs out. I also
stopped reading news there and switched to BBC and NPR full time
and I am happier for it. I was not fully aware of just how much
the increasing hostility there was really bothering me.

I know WaPo isn't going to miss Lil Ole Me like I was some kind
of buying powerhouse that pleased the advertisers to no end, but
I did buy a LOT of stuff from the target marketing designed to
suit my tastes - I'd never been mined so effectively and
accurately before.
WaPo spent a TON of money on that software - maybe that's why
they couldn't pay to bring back the little OT checkbox... :-\

I did too. Not like they're going to go under without me
obviously, but wapo seemed to have a pretty clear idea of my
industry and I'd usually just click the link to buy stuff
because I'd think oh yeah I do need to order more of those and
click.

I actually thing it may have bugged her how much we didn't talk
about her column in there.

It was the one about almost not answering/publishing the letter
because she didn't want to set off a concert vs wedding war in
the commentariat.

I'm a little curious how she's gonna do the hoots without a
bunch of tangential/OT stories.
