What I sent to HAX about the OT ban
By: ricksterps Date: August 19, 2021, 9:35 am

Subject:Death of a Community
I read your explanation on why you thought you had to ban OT
form the comment section. I still don't get it.
That community, which is pretty much gone now, was responsible
for so much good in the world. People fell in love, they healed
from broken hearts, they grieved terrible losses, they
laughed--boy did they laugh. That was nowhere else in the WAPO
comment section--not even sure it was anywhere else on the
internet. That was all done with OT comments.
And you blew that up because some people couldn't scroll past
some posts? WAPO couldn't stomach paying for some coding
changes to add that little damn checkbox?
The comments are way down and many are canceling their subs as
soon as they are able. So there is definitely loss in revenue
over this mistake.
I am not sure who wins here but you've changed your comment
section to be the same colorless comment section that exists in
the rest of WAPO's columns.
Congratulations.

I agree about the loss. I just don't think she cares. Dumped
is dumped and we're like the ex who keeps explaining why it was
a bad idea. She doesn't want to hear it.
I made that up.
Wild speculation: She figures that we'll all fade away and a
new set of posters will set up their own shop and a new
community will grow and in the end it's all just the same old
same old. That is, if she even thinks about it at all, which I
kind of doubt.
Of one thing I am certain: she won't back down, apologize or
admit she might have been wrong. Partly because she doesn't care
that much and partly because that is not in her DNA.

I sent a really[s] well thought out logical [/s] emotional
argument about why what they were doing was wrong, how they
chose to do it was the worst possible way, and submitted to both
commentsatwashpost and the link they had with the tag that I was
canceling unless I heard back something, and *crickets*
Dumped is dumped is it.
It's a numbers game to them and the number of complaints
outnumbered the number in the community.

Comments were down on the retread columns (under 700 each day),
but it popped up to 1600 for the new letter (and when it was at
about 1400, someone on our board pointed out that it peaked at
2100 before the hamsters went home for the night).
I decided not to participate in any wakes there because as that
place died, we had the new baby in the nursery here. Seem that
this place will grow fast and well enough to satisfy me, and we
don't have to worry about telling dirty jokes.

Oh, I agree Hax has never apologized or admitted a mistake in
that space since I have been there. I know someone who is
involved in digital media marketing. Site hits a day and time
spent on site are what dictates what they can charge to
advertisers. That will definitely be tanking with this change.
We'll see how much they generate from ads on those sites. If it
is a real generator, I can see WAPO stepping in. Although the
damage is done now. Probably irreversible.

I never had any ads on WaPo - probably because I use an ad
blocker. I'm not sure how many people actually see ads on the
site.
Not sure how that works.

Well, what would they do, email us all and ask us to come back
pretty please?

I honestly doubt the advertising execs at WaPo are happy about
what's happened. When they first announced the OT ban, I assumed
comments might drop by about 200-300 at most. I really thought
people would still stay and comment mostly on-topic. But I've
been stunned by how few comments there are on her columns. She's
at 547 right now; normally she'd be at 1000 by this time of day.
I can only assume the pageviews are significantly down too.
Since it seems that the decision to go OT was totally CH's, I
guarantee there are conversations going on about how this
traffic drop will affect their numbers.
Ironically, I think most of us would have stuck around if it
hadn't been for that dig she got in on last Friday's column.
That was just insulting. I don't think it occured to her that
people would pick up and leave en masse.

Oh, I saw ads. I'm actually a weirdo who likes ads and clicks
and maybe even buys things. Yet what I got from Wapo was 1. what
colors of lipstick old people should wear, 2. what types of
hairstyles old people should avoid, and 3. assisted living
facilities in my area.
😂🤷🏻‍♀️🤦ӿ
95;‍♀️
Someone spends as much money on targeting their ads as on the
new commenting software.

I probably would have stuck around, though less frequently, but
I did find that pretty rude too. I guess I'm enough of a
contrarian to prefer to not participate at all at that point.
